Birthday's coming up soon and I'm going to join either the ISRA Range in Bonfield or the ASC in Waterman. I know about the price difference, and the distance from my house is about the same. I would like to hear from members of both ranges as to why thy chose one or the other. Convince me why your range beats out the other one.

OK, fire for effect!

Thanks.

The ASC does not have overlapping ranges so if you are shooting at 100yrds you don't have to wait for the guys changing targets at 600yards to walk all the way there and all the way back.

ASC- Offers not only areas for Shotgunning... skeet /trap and such.

But the Rifle Ranges. You have 100, 200 open to the public.
600yd You have to qualify to shoot on, then its all yours ( events pending )

ASC- offers monthly PRACTICAL RIFLE ( PECKER54 ), PRECISION RIFLE ( ME )...
Classes are available from SAFERUSA for training needs.

GREAT people, ALL members I have met so far, have a dam good sense of ALL of us being a "FAMILY".

NO the ASC Ranges are not the perttiest, the Complex / facility is still fairly new to its new home, but in time
Will be one of the areas best Clubs.

I'm a member of the ISRA range and it does not have overlapping ranges either. It has a 100yd. range, 100meter range, and a 300yd range.  There is also a trap range and an archery range.  The archery and skeet ranges are not very nice, but the rifle ranges are.  The 300yd range has fully operational butts for lifting and marking targets.  If you are with a partner and you have radios, then you can shoot and switch without having to get up and mark your own targets.  I don't think ASC has those.

ASC has a 600yd range!! If I wasn't already a long time member of the ISRA range I would join ASC just for that.  ASC also has 25yd bays you can use for moving drills and such.

The facilities at the ISRA range are much nicer and there doesn't seem to be as much wind as the ASC.  All rifle and pistol firing positions are covered and have sturdy cement benches with steel baffles down range.  ASC looks like a new club that needs to get more equipment.

If I were to join one today, it would be the ASC just for the bays and the 600 yd. range, but overall I think the ISRA range is much more established and nicer.  If ISRA range had a 600yd range, I would join that one.

Hope this helped.

Howdy,

This is unfair for both clubs.  I belong to ISRA for over 13 years and I enjoy going there.  It's a peaceful day for me and I relax. ISRA has plenty of shoots and the is a plethera of things to do there.  There is always a place for you to shoot.   ASC has good programs and shoots.  JOIN BOTH!

Now for questions, where do you live?  Are you closer to either one?  Gas prices are getting prohibitive for most traveling.  Waterman is quite a hike for me living in Matteson, but ISRA is 45 minutes from my house.  I belong to ISRA.  I used to shoot Cowboy Action in Plainfield, Illinois, but it takes me 1 hour driving there.  Waterman is another hour after that, but will attend the Zombie shoots there in Waterman.  So don't limit yourself just to those 2 clubs-Howell has a club, Crystal Lake is getting a range, Buffalo Rock is still active.  Just go shoot.

Both ranges are nice, safe places to shoot. Not a lot of ya-hoos from what I've seen.
Shooting bays:

The Bonfield ISRA has a max range of 300Y, whereas the ASC has a max range of 600Y. The ISRA has 3 bays: 50Y pistol, 100Y rifle, 300Y rifle. The ASC has 25Y, 50Y, 100Y, 200Y, 600Y. In terms of the number of bays and options, ASC wins.
Property:

The ISRA range is much more developed than the ASC range. I wouldn't call them "nicer" per say, as I do like the open uninterrupted space at the ASC, but there are more benches, shelters, etc at Bonfield. What is nice about ISRA Bonfield is that their 300Y range has a fully functioning target pit where targets can be scored and serviced.
Programs:

As it pertains to me: ASC has an established Practical Rifle Program, as well as a precision rifle in development. The ISRA range hosts NRA High Power Matches. I like, and use both ranges during their programs.
Driving distance for me:

Both are 50 miles from where I live. One is west, one is south.
ETA: The ASC allows rapid fire, setting up shooting on the move, as well as shooting at steel targets. Not sure what Bonfield's policies on that are. The ASC is also usually fairly open, and with everyone acting as their own RSO (with communications if other people are present), it's a very relaxed and individualized atmosphere.
