I am in the process of finalizing a trade for a Garand.  Problem is the barrel is pretty well shot out (per owner).  I am thinking of re barrelling to 308.  I would like to stay local if possible.  Should I get the bbl re crowned and keep 3006 or rebarrel?  If rebarrel who do I go with or has someone near done this before?  I am in Plainfield near Joliet and would travel a ways to work on this.  Hometown members, what should I do?  email or pm.  Thanks, in advance.

The Garand is a great target or long distance rifle with custom work.  Personally, I would rebarrel and keep 30-06.  But I wouldn't limit myself to local smiths.  If you are going to pay to refurb a rifle that is not in perfect condition, send it to someone who can make it better than new because it is their business to do it.

I have went local and cheap before.  Will never do it again.

Pricey, but Krieger is fairly local as in Milwaukee.  You can drop off and pick up and still pay no tax.

If it matters, changing to .308 removes it's C&R status.

Try PPK Firearms in Mokena, they specialize in Garand stuff.  I've seen some of there work, and it's beautiful, but I'm not an expert on Garands. I've got their card somewhere, I can look it up for you if you are interested.

Here's one of the best places in the country.

http://www.shuffsparkerizing.com/

It's in Michigan, but on the south side halfway to Detroit.

Check out the Mini-G.  Very cool.
