I have to recommend the Gun Doctor although they have only done AR and bolt action work for me. I suggest you talk to him about what you want done to get a good feel for him. He's a very talented guy, and I know he's done a ton of 1911 work.
The best 1911 guy in Chicago is Barry at Maxon Shooter's Supply in Des Plaines, but I don't think he's taking work. Barry is one of the best in the country, though. |

Miller Custom is the best out there and is in Western IL. I don't think he is taking any small jobs right now, just full rebuilds or house builds. I suppose it would be cruel to post the pics of your 1911 after saying that he is not available. Canyon Creek might be worth your consideration but I have not used him personally. |

I had the total opposite experience with Barry at Maxon's. I thought I could save some time and money by having it done locally. I heard through local sources he was a good smith. I asked for a highcut on the triggerguard and fitting a new thumb safety on my 1911. It looks like he used a dremel for the high cut and didn’t even smooth it out. I did that on my own using sandpaper and elbow grease. I couldn’t send out the 1911 for chroming until it was done to my satisfaction. The Ed Brown thumb safety was mushy and not crisp at all. It was a month over the quoted time. The extra time didn’t bother me as much as the bad experience with the work. I know it was a small job to get the things I wanted done. But I paid good money and expected a job to be well executed.
I learned my lesson from that and only used gunsmiths that had extremely high, raving reviews from a multitude of sources whether they were local or not. I also wanted to see samples of the work done before letting another gunsmith touch my 1911. Spend the extra money to make sure that you really get a good gunsmith to do the job. It’s worth it in the long run. |

I got a 1911 back with a creepy mushy trigger pull that was anything but crisp, that allowed the hammer to follow the slide on more than one occasion. Would have kept firing had it not been for the half cock notch. They also FUBARED the series two safety to the point where it wouldn't work at random intervals. You could do a better job with a hacksaw and a mallet. I had them replace all the fire control parts, and bottom line is they have no idea how to work on 1911's. Shitty work is one thing, unsafe is absolutely unacceptable. They gave me both. I sent it to Robert Miller to correct it, and I went from literally the shittiest to the best trigger pull you could have on a 1911, thankfully he was able to salvage all of the parts. Best you can do is literally beg Miller to do the work you need done. The man is a 1911 artist, plain and simple. |
