Hello everyone,
I live in KS but my wife is looking at a job in Chicago. As much as I like the city I would rather attach the business side of a pair of jumper cables to my nuts than live there. But since this could be an opportunity I am trying to be supportive. Just wondering if someone could give me some insight on gun laws in Illinois. I own them all, shotguns, pistols and ARs. What problems will I be running into if we move into the city? Thanks in advance. |

For the state you'll need to apply for a FOID card (Firearm owners ID). You need it to possess any firearms or ammunition. If you move to the City of Chicago you're going to have to register everything you own, but you wont be allowed to register any handguns or any rifles that are on their list of "assault weapons". You need to renew your registration every year for each firearm. Also, you cannot bring them into the city until they are registered or they automatically become "un-registerable". Cook County (which includes Chicago) has its own assault weapons ban that includes hi-cap magazines.
We'll see how this all plays out after SCOTUS hears McDonald v Chicago Your best bet is to move to a suburban community that has a train station so she can ride it to work. |

Where in the city is the job? There's no reason to live within the city limits at all. Chicago has registration, a tight AWB, and a handgun ban that SCOTUS will hopefully strike down in the near future. Suburban Cook county has a nearly unenforced AWB, and a few suburbs have their own AWBs and handgun bans... at least until SCOTUS takes care of those too. Statewide, we have no CCW and no NFA, a FOID card, and a 72 hour wait for handguns and 24 for long guns. See http://www.handgunlaw.us for more specifics. If the job is within the city limits or not too far away, you could probably get away with living in Lake county, IN. Lower taxes, lower housing prices, CCW, NFA, etc... I'm planning on moving that way ASAP. |
| This all sounds horrible. Looks like I will be an Indiana resident if she decides to go for the job and gets it because there is no way in hell I would ever live in Illinois with laws like these. Being relatively far to the right I am affraid that Chicago's machine politics don't coincide with my lifestyle choices. |
| Kchustle, just move to dupage county or lake county(closest nice suburbs to the city), these are semi republican strongholds (or at least certain villiages are) and you can commute to the city no prblem, but Indiana would be a better choice but the skyway to the city is ALWAYS jammed. |
