So today was long stressful day. I when I got home there was no beer in the frig. Compared to the rest of my day, this was an easy problem to solve. I went to my local Jewel and grabbed a twelve pack. Who knows what the rest of the week will be like?
I went to the register and laid out what I thought was my preferred card. Brain fart, in reality it was my FOID, which sits in my wallet behind the preferred card. The cashier saw it and said "You got a gun! What are you a undercover cop?" I gave my standard reply to such situations, "No. Actually I have several guns, but not on me at the moment." Long conversation resulted centering around open and concealed carry. I paid for my beer and went home. How fricking clueless are people in this state? Anyone else have similar stories? |

I've used my FOID card as a second ID at a number of places and have never gotten so much as a weird look. This includes Chicago, several Cook Co. suburbs, and Champaign. |

Quoted: I find it ironic that your FOID, issued by the Illinois State Police, is not considered a valid ID at the Secretary of State's office. When I went last time to renew my drivers license, I noticed a sign posted indicating the FOID is not recognized. Seriously, FOID is stupid and if the state refuses to recognize it as a valid ID, what is the point? |

People control, exercise of power, excuse to confiscate guns and/or prosecute the unwary, registration of gunowners and, in the brady bill era, associated firearms purchase records. Just makes people jump through a hoop at the whim of the government. |

A few weeks back I got pulled over by a cop, and because I was really tired from work and flustered by having trouble finding my Insurance Card, I handed him my FOID instead of Drivers License. The cop simply said..."uhh, this is your FOID, you DO have a drivers license, right?" Honestly, I expected a lot of grief from this, or a request to search the car or something, but after producing my Drivers License and Insurance he pointed out that my front plate was dangling and might fall off and sent me on my way. I still laugh about it, but I'm betting most LEO's know that a legal gun owner is the least likely to cause an incident.

I have tried to use my FOID on occasions, and no one will take it as an ID. I explain to them what it takes to get a FOID vs and DL, and they stare at me like automotons. Oh wait. They WERE automotons, that's right.
I don't remember any extreme reactions, but many people think the FOID is a carry permit, a gun license, a gun registration card. One coworker got a great kick out of my Fla CCW, since I look like a Bulgarian terrorist in the photo. ETA....take it back. My FOID got me a cold Budweiser at Busch Stadium. (II) |

My FOID got me through TSA screenings with no drama a little while back. My drivers license had expired ( Need to get some legislator to attach a rider to the Sec of State funding bill or whatever to require them to accept FOIDs. I think the rationale was that in the old days I don't think they did anything to establish identity, but now they cross reference FOIDs with ID/DL records so they should be reliable as identification. The time I lost my wallet and had to replace everything the FOID was gone along with the DL so it didn't matter... always nice to have the "trump card" (passport) at home in the safe if something like that happens. |
