I'm in Mokena (NE Will County) and it's been out since 2:15 this morning.  Got the generator roaring away in the garage.

I was at Home Depot this morning and was wondering why there was a run on generators...

Carbon monoxide kills.

For the love of god, move the genny outside.

Even with the door open i'd still put it outside.

My lines are underground which helps a little. Stay warm, run the generators outside.

I didn't lose power(Midlothian, south Cook County) but my GF(Palos Hills, southwest Cook, near DuPage) lost power and my sister(Chicago Ridge, also Cook Co.) had a window on her 3rd floor condo blow out at 3 AM last night.  My mom was over there house sitting.  Everyone is ok at my sister's, my GF has power back on.

Picture it being right at the edge of the garage, with the exhaust pointing out, and the door closed down to right above the exhaust.  It was venting outside.  The plan has always been to get a transfer switch in the basement, in which case the generator would be outside in back, but that's one of those things I haven't gotten around to.

Power ended up coming back on at about 12:30, so it was out for a little over 10 hours.  I wired an extension cord into the furnace at about noon, so I had the heat running again.  Next time I'll do that a lot earlier, since it turned out to be really simple.

I'm in Mokena.  I know my church in Palos Park didn't have power this morning, but my in-laws in Palos Heights did.  It'd be pretty crappy to be without power for a day or two with the weather this cold.

The power went out here about midnight and wasn't back on when I went to bed at 0400. It was back on sometime before 0630 though.
