Not my house of course...the local natives have yet to pull some of that shit.  This is an email from my brother to the rest of the family regarding a recent break-in at his house...He lives in Decatur  BTW...........

Update

Once again our house was broke into.....

WIFE and kids were in Wisconsin and I was in **** for ****** training and Tuesday night some dumbasses broke into our house,  I think they stole small electronics shit and we are still getting our list together of missing items,,,oh yeah they also stole a 6 pack of bud light.

Must have been kids because no big ticket items were stolen. There have been several other auto and home breakins lately in the area and the next night someone broke into ******* van during the night.

There are several courses of action.  1. Motion lights outside at night 2. Security Systems, and 3. Big fat Gun.  This is still considered apretty decent neighborhood, but what the fuck?  I have never really swayed far left or far right in my political opinions, but I am starting to fully understand the gun owners who want to right to own protection.  I am certainly rational, but if this happens again and I am home, I would have absolutly NO ******  ******* some degenerate who does not belong in my home.  I have been told be several reliable sources that if there is a home invasion to make sure the "dumbass" who breaks in is ******* before you call the cops....therefore you have no my word against their word.  God forbid some "dumbass" gets hurt breaking into someone's house and tries to sue your ass.  I am not a FOID card holder or a gun owner, but have been contemplating this for the past 48 hours.....BIG ISSUE....safety of the children in my family.  Of course there is the safety of my family if some "dumbass" tries to break in again.

I do not own firearms...(yet) or (maybe)....but those who own them responsibly...I no longer fault anyone who wants to own a gun....period.  I really feel sorry for the "dumbass who breaks into someone's house in our neighborhood and meets a homeowner itching to pull the trigger.  Then we will have to feel sorry for that degenerate who was killed trying to rob someone.

Take care for now and all si well here, but I no longer will make fun of the responsible gun owner who is out to protect themselves.

Love  / *****

So anyway, my brother has always been anti-gun and always gave me the "Rambo/G.I. Johnny" crap everytime he saw  me.    He called me last night before the email and I was astonished at the 180 degree turn since the last time we discussed guns.  I know he is still blowing off steam, but between myself and some of his cio-workers, I think has decided to start excercising his 2A rights.  He still has some challenges ahead of him like convincing his wife on getting a gun, and confirming in his mind that he can safely keep a gun in the house with 4 children ranging from 2-14 YO.

So, I suggested motion lights, permanent lights on the garage and front yard, and possible a security system.  I suggested only a gun after you get the others covered.  I think the lights will be the most effective as a deterent, but owning a gun and learning to shoot it will ease his mind that his home has been violated.   Does anyone know of any places in the Decatur area that offer basic instruction?  I think it will be critical for he, the wife, and the oldest kid to be trained how to use any firearm purchased.  Of course I stressed the importance of a  bedside safe and trigger locks, but making sure the little ones resopect and understand what the gun is will be the most important.

Any other suggestions?

Ask him what his wife's plans are if someone breaks in while she is home alone?

Good luck!

Nucstl, hats off to you, and good luck.  What you're doing is how a country gets changed.

The Basic Pistol Class as taught by MWGCA stresses situational awareness personal and home safety/security practices.  It's surely available in Decatur or Springfield, maybe Darnall's.

NRA has a course called "first shots", I think aimed toward women.  Very short, very simple, "this is how a gun works, don't point it until you want to destroy something," etc.  It's only an afternoon long, I think.  John @ Midwestern Firearms can tell you more.  Sounds like it's a little early for that for her, but keep it in mind.

Ayoob wrote a book called "In the gravest extreme".  It includes gun stuff, but also the nonfirearms stuff.

Oh, he could move to a new place.

I don't have a lot of input about safes and such.  I'm kind of of the mind that you have the gun at your immediate reach or you lock it up securely.  Never much been a fan of "instant access" safes.  I don't trust them.

Motion lights and security systems DO NOT stop criminals with guns/knives!  What do you do in the critical 3-5 minutes after the intruders break into your home and have guns?  Wait for the security company to call and tell them it is not a false alarm?

I sure wish people would think this through because it only takes one time to happen and when it does it could be TOO LATE!

You reach for firearm and take cover!  Make sure all of your family members know where to take cover and what to do and NOT to do if the event ever happens in real life!

Know how to operate your choice of firearm and know what to do in case of a malfunction, etc. EVEN IN THE DARK!

Nights sights on any handgun are a must!  A gun is useless if you cant see its sights!

Thanks all for the input.  This is a major uphill battle as getting my brother to even agree that I( or anyone for that matter) should own any gun we want..  Unfortunately it took him getting robbed.  With that behind him I tried not to freak him out saying that he needs to get a hand cannon, sand bag the front door, and buy the family body armor.  I wanted  him to think about why his house was a target in the first place, fix those problems, then consider how he would protect his family if the intruder broke in while they were home.  Luckly, a guy he works with is a seriour gun afficinado whos father owns a gun shop, so that helps my efforts.  He even asked me if I would come down sometime in the next couple weeks so he could shoot some of my guns...Hopefully by Christmas he will have his first AR.  If he even seems remotely interested in getting an AR, I will start builing him one ASAP....and gift it for Christmas.
