I know some people have had bad experiences there but for those who still shop there the factory shoot is going on today too.

In addition to various small door raffle prizes (pocket knives and things like that) which you get the ticket for by walking in the door, they had tickets that you could buy to win some handguns and a trip to The Site. If you bought a gun, you got entered into a raffle to win one of three other guns, and also got a winchester bag of some sort.

The real story is the price they had on a 92FS Inox (499) and a Springfield Operator (599). Most of the guns on sale were Taurus or the like but it was worth going there alone to see them bring out for display all of the stuff they usually leave in back (SL8, M82A1, M99, various Colts).

I have never seen that place so packed. It is like going to a night club, that crowded. As for the factory shoot part of it, I believe they closed one of their ranges and let people try out their rental guns. I do not have the details on this as the line was too long. If any one did get to shoot, can you please explain what it was about? Did you have to buy ammo or was it provided?

I was trying to get out there  today but I'm stuck working and it looks like it's not going to happen.

I was interested in perhaps trying out  some pistols to nail down which .45 cal I want to get. I was there last year and it was pretty packed as well. I might be better off just renting on a non event day to do my research.

The last few years I've been you can pretty much try out anything, and all you have to do is pay for the ammo.

There is also IDPA at Howell's Shooting Club www.howellshootingclub.com in Yorkville and also at the Oak Park Sportsman's Club in Plainfield. Both clubs run outdoor matches so we start up in a couple of months. Racine WI which is just over the border holds indoor matches in the winter as well.

Also, as for larger matches the IL state championship, IN state championship, WI state championship and Midwest Regional Championship are all within driving distance. We have a contingent at Howell's who is planning on caravaning to these matches. I know a few people who go even further afield and hit Iowa and Michigan as well.

As for the factory shoot - it was way to crowded and I am still pretty bad off with my pneumonia but we headed out for an hour or so to check it out. I shot the Desert Eagle in 50AE because I figured I might as well - I beat my husband with it too with two X's and three 9's which I didn't figure was so bad for 5 shots with a gun I never used before. If it weren't for those ESP weight limits I think I'd get one rigged up with a holster to shoot just for the foulness factor, but for now I'll stick with my 1911 and Walther setups for CDP, ESP and SSP.
