I just ordered a stripped Spikes Zombie lower. I though It would be kind of cool to start a thread to cover the complete build. I am still not 100% percent on which way I am going to go with this build. But for now I am going to start looking for a LPK to install in it. I also would encourage any recommendations on parts but I please ask as to why you recommend the part so I can consider the diff. I will list the prices of what I pay too that way we will see if it turns out cheap or not lol. So far the lower receiver is costing me 126.34 total. That includes shipping and trans I do not pay for a bk check. I will also post pics as I get the parts and install them. Oh yea this is my first ever build and the second ar I will own.

I used spikes nickle boron trigger
along with a jp precision lpk that doesn't include fire control group.

I used a YHM lightweight free float quadrail It's heavy as hell and feels like a cheese grater had to cover it up with index clips
for the lr 308 build I'm doing now I ordered a troy trx modular free float. Not in my hands yet but I think for the weight and the improved ergonomics it'll be well worth the extra couple bucks and I won't need index clips.

I hate gov profile barrels I'm using a wilson combat 16" stainless recon profile with a 1:7 twist
going with a fulton arms stainless for my current build still can't decide how long I want it.

I like a low profile gas block and a rail that completely covers it I've just ordered them from the barrel company.

an upper receiver is an upper receiver

Have only tried a magpul acs and standard m4 stock so far the locking feature on the magpul stocks is worth the extra couple bucks.

I have found that slowly building your own rifle generally tends to cost more than you could get a bare bones ar off the shelf for, you feel the need to spend the extra couple of bucks on a lot of parts to get what you really want. Throw in the shipping and it can add up to a lot.

It's a good idea to try and consolidate orders you will have shipped it makes shipping much cheaper and stops you from upgrading every little part when you see the total all added up in one place.

or go swing by the local shops.

I plan on going to the shops but also seeing what I can find used. I have no problem putting good used parts on my rifle. What differance does the twist make ?

I put a spikes tactical enhanced LPK in my first build. It wasn't the least expensive but you get a lot of good stuff with it. The Nickle boron battle trigger, spikes trigger guard, KnS pins, ambi safety, ergo grip etc. Its a good price for what you get. You may want to consider piecing it out, that is what I am doing in my next build. PSA sells individual pieces as does brownells. That way you can put what ever grip, safety lever and FCG in it that you want. No since buying stuff you will not use. Piecing it out may be the way to go, not that it hurts to have spare parts.

the twist is a ratio revolutions per inch 1:7 1 revolution in 7 inches.

The faster twists will stabilize a heavier projectile.

1:9 is fine for regular 55 grain and I'm sure it works fine for 62

if you want to shoot tracer rounds and long match ammo in subarctic temperatures the faster twist will stabilize it.... for what that's worth

You should also take the time to just go use the ar you already have and see what it is you want to improve or change about it.

Try to see some of the other rifles out there, there are tons of pics and a greet build it yourself section of this forum that may inspire you.

Lot's of different directions you can go.

Now you got me thinking about the next build i wanna do after i finish the one i haven't even gotten the parts for yet...

welcome to BRD

Why don't you try shooting a GI trigger before wasting money on an expensive trigger that may provide negligible benefits?

Is this guy in Vegas or Reno???

Dude, Timney can suck it because THIS is the best trigger you ever get to finger:

Ok, so buy the fire control parts kit from Palmetto without the trigger and SURPRISE they should sell the S3G trigger.  Get your BCG from Del-Ton for cheap OR if they aren't in stock look around to R-GUNS which seems to have some decent stuff for cheaps.

Upper:

Just buy whatever has a 1:7 twist.  It's tacticool. 1:9 is for pussies. 1:8 is for megapussies.

I am in Vegas. I think Im goung to go with a different trigger set up after more research. I should actually pick the lower up today hopefully if I have time

If you really, really just have to have a fancy trigger, I'd get one of the ALG ACT or QMS triggers. Made by Geissele and a lot cheaper than their high end triggers. But seriously, it's your first AR, get a quality standard parts kit, spend the fancy trigger money on ammo, and shoot the damn gun.  But what do I know?

the spikes NiB trigger I linked to earlier is only like $10 more than a standard trigger you could add some jp reduced power springs and get a pretty dang nice trigger that way
12/11/2012 2:30:59 PM EDT
[#14]
I would definitely recommend a Geissele trigger. It is worth the money, and extremely durable.

I thought I'd never say this, but, "Im with Rider79"

Buy a regular trigger first, shoot lots and lots.   Then spend $250 on some "Special" trigger and see if your groups tighten up ??

You'll wish you kept the $$

They had a sale.

EDIT: Yes that would most likely be the one.  They're usually $150 if I remember correctly.  Good parts but smooth the trigger parts with some 1000 grit before you install them.  It helps keep people from complaining about a gritty trigger.

ordered stuff from troy the 1st of this month still processing, ordered stuff from fulton arms a week ago still processing...

The confusing thing to me is they charged my card but now the charges don't show up anymore.

From the reports I've read on PSA they tend to be pretty backed up getting things out 3 weeks may be optimistic.

Can't follow a cold link on my phone. But it looks like you have it on photobucket alread

In photobucket there are different links you can copy on the right side click the image code one and then you can just paste that in the reply. Or you can right click an image and choose copy image url then when you are replying click the little photo icon and paste the image url un the box that pops up

Eta looms like you beat me to it
Lookin good so far
