Im looking at getting a street bike, yes im a street novice with dirt bike, quad experience transitioning into street. Im looking for the sport/race bike look but with a street tune/feel. Im looking at a 2003 Honda VFR 800 at the moment. Any opinions on this bike?

I have a 1998 VFR800 and like it a lot.

I've ridden faster bikes, but I think it is about the best compromise between comfort, performance, and economy there is.  They have about the best sound a motorcycle can have and are comfortable enough to tour on.

I just went from a ninja 250 to a gsxr 750.
I'm glad I spent the time on the small bike to get comfortable.

Most of the 600s are of similar price and caliber.

If you're interested in the small bike, I'm looking to unload the the ninja for cheap. Pm me if you want.

You have to compare apples to apples. A V4 is a different beast than an inline 4. Same goes for a twin. You can't simply just compare engine size/cc. Also look at an fz6.

Not a good choice for a first street bike.

The FZ6 is a good choice. Same with a SV650/Honda 599 etc.

I started on a 1100 V-Twin.  I passed the motorcycle driving test.... eventually.  Know your limits & respect them.  Get good at trivial riding skills before moving onto turns at 100+.  Lots of starts & stops with winding slow roads is a great way to practice up.  If you haven't thought of taking the motorcycle safety/skills class - give it a good look.  It will teach you useful skills & net you a discount on insurance.

I'm a huge fan of the VFR series.  My first was a 1995.  I currently have a 2004 & am very happy with it.

I've ridden the Yamaha, Suzuki, Honda, & several other offerings in 600, 750, 999/1000 & a few beyond.  I've always found the aggressive stance to be uncomfortable when riding more than an hour or two.  If you're looking for short hops the full on crotch rocket is really fun for the power/weight ratio.  I prefer the sports touring series of bikes for comfort and power.

I prefer the VFR800 Interceptor for a few reasons:

Comfort, both for driver and passenger.  It has a longer frame (nice when you're 6'6"), so your elbows aren't into your knees as bad & leaves more room for a passenger.
Single side swing arm means servicing is easy.  Did I mention is looks AWESOME?
Hydraulic everything (much more common now, but it didn't use to be).
Under seat exhaust (also much more common, but the single side swing arm isn't & without exhaust hiding it)
I like going fast every now and again - the engine has VTEC that kicks in around 6800 RPM.  Just ride the power curve high & you'll keep up with those 600's & 750's for the most part.
If you're really that worried about power, you can always upgrade exhaust & other features... toss on a power commander & tune it up.
Corners very smooth, lots of fun to ride.  Just DON'T cheap out on tires.

I think it's a great bike! (obviously)

Look forward to riding with you - whichever bike you decide to get =).

I wadded a VFR700 right in front of Blue Diamond in 1988. Does that count? I liked it a lot before I crashed it

There is a 99 vfr800 on reno craigslist for 2800 obo.  Says it's clean but had 52k.

If they are maintained, they last a long time.  They have ceramic composite cylinder liners that go and go.

I am a huge honda fan but I wouldnt buy any bike with that many miles. Too much abuse that could have piled up over the years

+1 on the SV650.  those small Bandits are a good entry level bike that have some OK get up and go.....not quite as much as the 600 sport bikes, but still good.

ETA:  I had a 500 ninja for a bit.....once it was carbed, piped, air box cut off w/ pod filters, cams re-timed, front end lowered 1", clip -ons.....it was a very nimble quick toy.

That was the bike I learned to race on. Shocking how well a little 500cc inline two can move someone even as big as me around the track. A ZX6R, ZX9R (my favorite bike of all time), and a GSX1000R (absolute dog turd of a bike), I still have fond memories of the half ninja. Kawasaki's have always been the most comfort driven (except for that torture device on two wheels known as the ZX10R) of the big four in my opinion (followed closely by Honda, Yamaha a little farther back, and Suzuki somewhere in BFE). Enjoy, be safe, and always remember; the moron in the lowered Escalade next to you can have a huge impact on the rest of your life.
