I will be taking a CCW class soon and I am thinking I want something bigger to complement my LCP.
Lets here what you like and why.

Also if you qualify a gun under CCW are you allowed to open carry said gun?

I bought a Kel-Tec PF-9 for that purpose. It's just ok. The trigger is pretty nice and its small and lightweight, but the fit and finish is very rough and I've found that it just doesn't do it for me. Thinking about going with a Kahr PM-9 or a Ruger LCR instead.

Open carry has NOTHING to do with it..... there is no law and never has been a law regarding open carry.

Nothing wrong with a Glock 19 in 9mm or 23 in .40sw.  You will have to decide on your own.  How about going to the gun ranges around town and rent one on the range to try it out?

CCW the biggest, highest capacity gun you can manage with relative comfort.

Most med-lg people can conceal a Glock 19 easily.  Try not to carry anything that would make you feel "under-gunned" in a gun fight.

You already have a deep concealment/pocket gun, get something with more oomph and higher capacity.
Glock 19 is a great reccomendation, and a compact XD, M$P, HK, or Sig would do ya just as well.
If youre part of the big dog  crowd, get a lil Springfield 1911 or a Glock 30.

Great advice, and most stores have a great selection to choose from.  A huge consideration is your wardrobe.  A button down shirt will let you get away with a lot more than a regular T shirt, so bring different samples with you when you test fire. For ME, the biggest I go is a Glock 19, occasionally a 17.

Couldnt have said it better.

I personally find Glocks bulky and difficult to conceal. I'm sure many people do it to good effect, but I prefer my CCW gun to be a bit thinner...

If I am wearing just a T-shirt I will carry a Sig P232, when I wear a button down shirt then it's a Glock 22 or XD45 Compact.

1- Find the gun that fits your hand. This is the most important part, coupled with #3. People often buy guns that don't fit then look like a monkey getting it on with a football.

2- Make sure caliber is another factor in deciding what you carry.

3- PIck a quality brand and leave it at that.

A gun store wants to sell you what they have, NOT what fits you.

Agree. I love my Glock 23, but its just too damn thick. I just got a Walther PPS-9mm and love it for how thin it is. I think if a CQ gunfight in self-defense goes more than 7 rounds, I've got bigger problems.

Not for me. I usually carry my G23.  I also carry a G19 or a HK P2000 (9mm). I started with the .40 and stuck with it but as you can see, I do own a couple of 9s.

Eagle, There have been several instances of home invasions where 3-4 adversaries kicked in a door. Look at that groundsworker at MGM that was swarmed by 10+ yout's. You can never have enough rounds ;)

This.

Finding the best selection for you, is up to you.  Go shoot what you can before you pick.

You also have to decide what you think will give you the best advantage over an advisary(s).  Large caliber for some, volume for others.  I can accept a little discomfort for a weapon that suits my needs.  A Glock 17 suits my needs, but I will occasionally carry a .45 in P220.

I am easily able to carry a glock 26 while wearing a tshirt.  Occasionally I will carry a glock 19.
One thing I didn't see mentioned is to get a quality belt and holster.

I am thinking about getting my CCW permit as well, and like the idea of trying them out at gunstores/ranges.  Does anyone know of a shop in town that has a PF9 available for rent?

I have a CZ-75b so I have the opposite problem of the OP.  I don't think I would want to carry the CZ.
