Hello.  I was wondering what the process was to buy a handgun from someone privately here.  Buying new, I usually get my blue card at the gunshop, nhot sure about PPT...

When I go to the police station to register the handgun, does the seller have to be there?  Also, I think the police do a quick background check, but what if I show them my CCW permit.  Can I avoid the fees of the NICS check by showing them my concealed carry permit?

when u do a ftf transaction here with a handgun, its best to do it at the substation. so that way say the gun comes up stolen or whatever u have the previouse owner there with you. having your ccw will do nothing when u get said firearm registered at a substation.. they will give u a blue card for the gun once u pass the b/g check.. i usually wait there when i sell a firearm just to make sure they get it registered and to put my info on the paperwork they make you fill out..

Thanks for the info.

Does the seller always have to be there?  I am thinking about both buying and purchasing a handgun maybe tomorrow.

I tried selling my handgun today at the gunshow and a guy was interested.  I told him we'd both have to go to the substation together to do the transfer, but he wanted to stay at the show for a while longer and said that I can just hand it over to him and he'll register it later.  I said "no, thanks."  Same thing happened with another person.  He complained and I said, "how do I know you'll register it?"  He replied, "how do I know it isn't stolen?  I'm taking the bigger risk going to jail trying to register a stolen gun.".  I left it at that...

Can I just hand it to the person I'm selling to (I'd take down all their DL info just for my records) or do I have to be at the substation with them?

I once purchased a handgun at a local dealer (now closed) and found out when I tried to add it to my CCW that it was not registered.  Of course I thought I did; filled out the metro gun registration form, 4473, got the blue card.  Some snafu with the mailing in of forms is what I thought.  Wasn't a hassle really, the ccw lady said to go down to a substation and register it.  That's what I did.

you can if u want to but you would be putting your self at risk if you didnt know the person.. might end up being the gun that robs the next bank or shoots up a school.. i personally dont want one of my firearms going into the hands of sum scumbag who cant pass a b/g check.. i make it a point to wait till they get their bluecard and then i leave..

No NICS or background check when you do a FTF sale.

If the handgun is registered in Clark County before the sale, the seller does not have to worry (as far as legal requirements) that the buyer registers it in his name.  But, it is good practice, as the seller, to avoid issues in the future, to make sure the buyer gets its registered.  Again, not required though.

If you're the buyer, you don't need the seller to go to a Metro station to get it registered, to meet legal requiremets.  But, if it was stolen, etc., yuo hand over the money, seller is long gone, and when you go to register it if it comes up stolen, you lost your cash and the gun.

I bought a Glock awhile back, had it shipped here to a FFL, they did the transfer, months later Metro comes to confiscate the gun because it came up stolen 3 or 4 transfers before the one to me.  Luckily, I got most of money back from my seller.
