COLUMBUS, Ohio (April 25) - A black teenager who died at an Ohio church camp last spring was the victim of an asphyxiation prank that was little better than a lynching, alleged lawyers for the boy's mother who have filed a civil rights claim. James McCoy III, a member of Church of the Messiah in suburban Westerville, was found hanging from a tree last April 22 in a remote area of Camp Cotubic, a Christian camp east of Bellefontaine where his youth group was on retreat. It was his 18th birthday. News reports at the time said authorities were told McCoy had inexplicably wandered off from the group and that his friends were confused and shocked by his death. A preliminary coroner's report called the death a suicide. But a lawsuit filed Monday in Franklin County Common Pleas Court alleges that the boy died as a result of his friends, who were white, playing a version of a choking game on him as a birthday prank. The lawsuit, seeking $25,000 in damages, claims that four unidentified youths gave false statements to authorities after the incident, leading officials to believe McCoy had been depressed and suicidal, and later created false writings to back up their story. "If this was a hanging, it was a lynching rather than a suicide," said Cliff Arnebeck, an attorney for McCoy's mother, Tonya Amoako-Okyere. The suit further claims that four unnamed authorities involved in responding to the incident were negligent in monitoring the youth outing, failed to quickly resuscitate McCoy and never investigated whether he might have been the victim of racial violence. Church officials reached by The Associated Press said they were unable to comment on the lawsuit or the circumstances surrounding McCoy's death on the advice of their attorney. A message seeking comment from Logan County Coroner Michael Failor was not returned. McCoy's death has already drawn the attention of the U.S. Department of Justice, whose civil rights section closed an initial investigation into the matter last month. In a letter to Amoako-Okyere, authorities said they had determined they either lacked evidence or jurisdiction to pursue criminal charges but that she may want to pursue options in civil court. Bellefontaine is about 50 miles northwest of Columbus. |

If we had WET (White Entertainment Television) ... we'd be racists. If we had a White Pride Day, you would call us racists. If we had White History Month .. we'd be racists. If we had any organization for only whites to "advance" OUR lives ... we'd be racists. We have a Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, a Black Chamber of Commerce, and then we just have the plain Chamber of Commerce. Wonder who pays for that? If we had a college fund that only gave white students scholarships ... you know we'd be racists. There are over 60 openly proclaimed Black Colleges in the US, yet if there were "White colleges". THAT would be a racist college. In the Million Man March, you believed that you were marching for your race and rights. If we marched for our race and rights, you would call us racists. You are proud to be black, brown, yellow and orange, and you're not afraid to announce it. But when we announce our white pride, you call us racists You rob us, carjack us, and shoot at us. But, when a white police officer shoots a black gang member or beats up a black drug-dealer running from the law and posing a threat to society ... you call him a racist. I am proud. But, you call me a racist. Why is it that only whites can be racists? |

On the other hand, some of these Assholes need to trade their residencies in America with other countries that they support. I imagine attorney ethics codes prevent you from "narcing" on the societal sponges. Don't get me wrong, I am glad that we are all entitled to good legal representation, but that has got to tear you up sometimes. Suppose a call to secret witness or something might help that neighborhood? Good for business,too, as you could pick up felonious BF (BM is probably better label). |
