I'm in this quandary.  I kinda want to buy another handgun, this time one on the nicer side (maybe a 1911) to add to my starter gun collection, but I keep having this nagging concern that maybe I should be looking at picking up another type of evil assault rifle.  The reason for the concern is due to the current makeup of Congress and the possibility of another ban....especially if the most horrendous possible scenario of the upcoming Presidential race happens.

What say you (other than buy both....I have a budget I have to live by)?

with regard to handguns, what do you actually carry/CCW?

get an exact duplicate of that gun.

"assault" rifles and mags are seemingly always on the chopping block.

if you think they may try a new ban, then an investment in practical things likely to be banned would seem pruden.

I would buy lowers only, and trade as necesary to complete if the situation arises.  To be sure a nationwide ban will be the product of the Democratic "victory" in the next Prez erection.  The next ban will not have an expiration date, remember it will be for your children.

In regard to CCW, I'm in the process of getting ready to go to Metro and get that part of it done (my Utah paperwork is already in).  This week or next week I will get down there.  I have an 3" barreled auto in .40 SW and this week sometime I'll also have a Beretta Tomcat.

Unfortunately, I believe there's a REAL possibility of things going "banned" again.  That's why I've been thinking about picking up another black rifle of some sort....maybe in .308 this time or maybe a "value priced" .223.  Kind of a investment if you will.

Part of the quandary is I go shooting pistols a heck of a lot more than rifles so a rifle would be money spent on something stored in the safe most of the year versus a pistol which I'd use/enjoy more often.

I heard the liberals in the new Congress want to permanently ban any rifle that has the ability to accept a Swiss Army Knife, a Compass, a Key Holder, and a Hood Ornament.

I'm savin' up for one of these before they're banned:

ON THE BAN LIST...

You know whats funny. I buy guns in anticipation of a ban and then sell or trade the damn things away before I know it. I'm going to quit buying stuff for "future investment" in the gun world, it just doesn't make sense for me to keep doing that. I'm buying stuff I want now.

Pretty much same here.  What I did to hedge my bet was buy a few AR receivers and quite a few hi cap mags for both rifle and pistol.  All of the items mentioned cost less than $400.00 combined.  I also bought an FAL kit and am on a waiting list for a receiver for same..  I'm not terribly concerned about magazines going bad but having a few spares for parts is a good idea.

I have had the same thoughts -
As mentioned already, you should purchase one or two lowers (approx. $220.00 ea.) and if you have monet left over purchase a 1911 model and upgrade it as funds permit.

I'll be picking up about 10 stripped lowers when I come back on my mid tour.  You can never have too many AR-15's

Besides, I've grown bored with shooting pistols.

Which components have to be shipped to an FFL when buying them?

I've been going the other way.  Fewer guns, more ammo, spare parts and accessories.

I agree, if i don't shoot it, i sell it. There has been a gun gun or two that i regretted selling--a tricked out 4" 686 comes immediately to mind.  However, I do tend to turn spare parts into new rifles

Well what's the average cost of putting one together with parts?  The reason I ask is that if I have to go through the hassle of an FFL to buy a lower, why not just spend a bit more and pick up an entire gun?

Trying to learn where you guys are coming from.

Less investment in a lower than an entire gun.

So, you can buy more lowers so you could have more guns or make more $$ in the long run.

My strategy as of late is to buy some more rifles and also buy more mags of the AR variety.  I just picked up another AK in 7.62 since I have lots of mags for that and bought a Robarms XCR since it takes AR mags and has been getting great reviews.  I am waiting for sig to get more 556's into the marketplace and work out some of the "cosmetic" issues and then I grab one of those too (more AR mag compatibility there).  You might also look into getting some folding/collapsable stocks for your different rifles as added insurance.

If you're into AR's, I think buying a quantity of the CProducts stainless mags would be a great idea since stianless will definitely outlast aluminum by a long margain.  That's if you really do a lot of shooting.  You can never have too many mags!

just my humble opinion!

Naw just a few more bucks here and there.

10 stripped lowers would only set me back about the same price as 1 complete AR.  Back in the ban days a stripped preban lower would go for damn near $1k on it's own

So for an investment of $1k can turn into $10k if something shitty goes down in Congress or I can have a lifetime supply of AR receivers should I blow up another preban like I've done in the past

And yes I will be buying more ammo and less new toys in the future.  Nothing new is really coming out that interests me enough.  Other than that 220 SA that is.

What's the big deal about lowers (pre and post ban)?  As a newbie I was thinking the barrels were more of the issue i.e. fixed suppressors, bayonet lugs etc.

Just trying to learn...................

That's the part of the gun that would make it pre-ban, meaning you can have all the evil goodies like removable flash hiders, bayo lugs, etc.

The sucky part is, what if they make a new ban similar to the '94 one...you'll need proof that the lower sold as a complete rifle, IIRC?

What a mess!  Just when I thought I might consider buying some lowers vs. complete rifles.  This shit it complicated.

No, it wasn't that way in 94 either from what I remember it just had to be in a certain serial number range.

I'm glad to say I'm forgetting all the bullshit from the 94 ban.

About the cheapest AR you can put together wiht new parts would run you about $550 give or take a few bucks..

You can buy Hi quality brand name lowers for roughly $100 each..  Pedro66 here in our hometown forum has stated he will do FFL transfers for 20.00 a 4473 which I think is 3 lowers.  This is a nice way to go for because for  one you can piece together exactly what you want at your leisure once you own the lower.
