I'm looking for a local source for food storage type stuff.  I'd really like to find some of those 5 gallon buckets and mylar bags.  Are there any local sources in the LV area?

Hk, I have only been looking for a few months now, but there are a lot of places online to find that stuff, but locally I have found that Battle Born Tactical has some of that stuff in stock along with H2O barrels, MRE's, purification, etc.  They have also been willing to go out if their way to order things if they dont have it in stock.
They have earned repeat customers in my wife and I. (Grammar check?)
I believe that their website has directions and phone #'s

Good luck!

Wow thanks for the tip on Battle Born, I never even knew about them.

Most of my food storage stuff, I order online, so its good to know there is a local place.

I am heading into Vegas tomorrow (I am out in Pahrump) so I will drop by and check them out.

Battle Born has 55 gallon water storage containers? If somebody can verify this please post it so I can pick some up.

What he said...I wasn't able to find anything related to storage of water (or food for that matter) on the website.

There is a place called the Barrel Co

3433 Losee Rd # 3
North Las Vegas, NV 89030
(702) 642-7785

They carry water storage drums (15, 30, & 55 gallons) and acc. They were out of the 5 gal last time I was there but may have some in now.

Any idea how much the 30s and the 55s go for?

I just picked up two stackable 7gal water containers from walmart for $8 or $9 each.

Oh and for 5 gallon food grade buckets check out the home brewing store on Maryland across from UNLV. I know they have them with lids that have a hole for an airlock but they might have some regular lids as well.

Just remember, those are only stackable when empty.

Yep, that's straight from the manufacturer, Reliant.

Thanks for the excellent link. It also looks like I did good by not getting one of the 6gal cans walmart had. I almost got one of these to keep in the Bronco at all times.

Yeah, stay away from those "Desert Patrol" containers.

For the car/truck I'd strongly suggest something a little more sturdy than an Aquatainer.  Look for Military Water Can (MWC) by Spectre or LCI.  They're much sturdier than Aquatainers but pricier too.  Aquatainers are fine for storage at home though Herebuylci.com/  They should have them on the front page.  Just use the link to shop as a guest on the left side and you can get in there to look around.

MWCs are also available from places like Davidson's and Brigade Quartermasters online. Shipping might suck though.

If you do can you let me know how much they are? I am too lazy to call and it isn't close enough to just drop in for me.

Lazy ass!

I just called, they have 5 in stock and here is the pricing...

55 container for water $89
Wrench (I'm still confused what this is for) $29
Pump $82

They can get them in about 3 days too when these 5 are gone.

you can get used 55 gal drums from the winery in Pahrump for about $15 each.

Wolfpack- the wrench is for the bung on the drums... price seems hich for a piece of cast aluminum with no moving parts. you can probably find it cheaper online. i think i paid $12 for the one i had.

there's also a variety of pumps for 55 gal drums, you can probably find something for around $30 with a little hunting.

if ONE person made the run over the hump, to get drums for several pwople, that would defray the fuel/transport costs.

Damn, I was just at the winery last month.

Does the winery use plastic drums like what we are talking about here?

Thanks! That does seem a bit expensive though. I am pretty sure I saw some for less than that shipped on some website. I will have to look again when I get home.

Thanks for the heads up fixer! Now that is a price worth calling for!

yup, AFAIK they are the standard blue (or white?) plastic drums. food grade, used once for grape juice. they need to be cleaned out with bleach and water before being used for water storage.

i "know a guy" who knows exactly who to contact...dunno if he gets 'em directly from the winery, or thru one of the local feed stores. but if we were to coordinate this well, it could save everyone some time and effort.

i'll find out more info on saturday.

At the Barrel Company I paid:

$29 each for 15gal containers (new)
$13 for the bung wrench (hehe...I said bunghat
Remember, water is heavy (8+ lbs per gallon) That 55gal drum will weigh over 450lbs when full.

Definately heavy. Thats why you put it where you want it before filling it up.

I would prefer 30gal drums myself due to the weight but if we can get 55gal drums at fixer's price I won't be passing that up.

Do you guys have climate controlled storage for all these barrels of water?  Just curious...

I have space under my stairs that I will be using for all of my emergency items. There isn't a vent in there but the door to it is in my bathroom which has a vent. Temps should stay pretty close to the temps of the house.

Right now I have my beer making equipment in there but that can be moved to the garage.

I'm planning on buying a shipping storage container for my land in Rachel, those are insulated well. That is where I'm storing my stuff at.

it's WATER, if it's in your garage for example, the temp changes shouldn't be a problem.

however, you do want to heep the barrels out of the sun, UV will break down the plastic over time and sunlight can promote algae growth... if there's anything in it ifter you treat it with bleach for storage.

you also want to keep the bung end covered with a contractor grade trash bag or something like that to keep dust and crud away from the bungs.

Higher temperature promotes bacterial or microbial growth. Temperature extremes put stress on containers. Direct sun, forget that of course due to the algae but even storing in a hot 120 degree garage is questionable to me.  Our water is stored with bleach, in a temp controlled environment.  Maybe I'm being too paranoid.

Go to www.beprepared.com , I have not looked at the website yet, but I am looking at the current catalog right now. 55 gal drums for 2 or more are 64.95 each, siphon pump is 12.95 and bung wrench is 7.95. It says orders of $120 or more ship for $12. There is lots of good stuff in here, I assume the website is the same.

ETA: yep, I just put 2 drums in the cart and shipping was only $12, Tax would be that much

Just on a side note...

My uncles place down in texas, has 4 55 gal drums connected to the house cold water imput, after the filters and such, when you run cold water, it comes out of the barrels, and they are refilled at the same time from the city water line, IIRC he had to do some reinforcing on the outside of the barrels when he put them in a preasured chain.

I can get real details if you need them.
