Well, I spent the better part of today running around between gun stores after my wife gave me my annual allowance. I've got a grand burning a hole in my pocket and didn't spend a nickel today! Why? Follow along:

1) First stop, MG Kelly's Gun Vault, where his very informative 9-year-old son explained to me exactly why I should pay $400 for a post-ban Romanian-made SAR-1 rifle. These can be had all day long for $100 less online, so the trick is finding them locally for the same price. But $100 more? I was also interested in a Mossberg 500 Persuader they had for $270, which I thought was high. So, since this was my first stop, I decided to not impulsively take the first offer that came my way, and left.

2) Next stop, Accuracy Gun Supply, on Boulder Hwy. Unfortunately, they stock mostly hunting rifles and the like, and nothing that was very sexy. I left within 5 minutes of my arrival.

3) Next stop, and about an hour later with all of the damn tourist traffic, I arrive at The Gun Store on Trop. I've bought several times here before, so it's my old stand-by. No SAR-1s, no good deals on ARs, and nothing very alluring in the handgun market. Interestingly, though, the same Persuader weapon that Kelly's wanted $270 for was going for $217 here. Nice, eh? But still, I didn't want to dip into my funding with a $15 Brady fee and only get one gun out of the deal.

In the end, I returned home to the northwest having spent the better part of four hours and nothing to show for it. There isn't anything too enticing in the local Equipment Exchange, so what now?

Quantico Arms is selling Eagle Arms (Armalite) stripped lowers for $75, I'm getting 20 of them, and I'm getting 11 more for 2 friends. If you want to get a couple send me an IM, I'll be ordering on Thursday probably.

I don't know what I would do with it. I really need some complete firearms for my money, so that I can get back out to the desert for some fun. I'm thinking about going back to Kelly's and asking him for a deal on the SAR-1. Anyone have any experience with them?

Instead of buying one of those Rick has a little AK build here..

If you want an AK that might be the cheapest way to go. Then go spend your $$ on a nice couple of handguns or rifle.

There are some deals out there to be had.  Mainly on the internet, so do your homework first.  Mostly you need to find an ffl you trust and who will do the transfer for you.  Most charge 25 or so.  I have stopped going to many of the gunstores mainly because I can do it on line easier and don't have to put up with a bunch of opinion.

<grin>What the heck I know everything already.  LOL

May I suggest a CCW course. The CCW is good for 5 years. It can, and has in my case, saved a bunch of money in background checks, not to mention the aggravation of waiting on a phone call.

An alternative to the Mossberg is the Maverick and it can be had at Wally world for about 180 or so last time I checked.

Another place to check is Bills buy and sell, While many on here don't like to go in there, it will give you an idea of what can be had here.  And sometimes you can find a bargan.  Pay cash though, he charges surcharge on credit cards, checks and debit cards.  I figure it's just because he can.

I would not order a gun through there, the fees are too high.
check out the survival store on spring mountain.  The fellow seems liek a nice enough person.  Transfers there were last time i checked - $25 and they would send the ffl out to the person you wanted, you have to supply the envelope and postage.  The gun store on trop charges sales tax on the entire gun purchase, although it is a mail order.  Many others do not charge the sales tax.

If you can make it out to DBS on the third saturday of the month, we have an informal shoot, group of people who like to shoot everything, bring the wife and let her shoot some, and if she doesn't like to shoot then she can talk with the other women that are out there and find out you are not "different" for liking guns.

Thanks for the considerate posts, guys.

I looked at the Mavericks, but decided to go with the Mossberg shorty at TGS anyway. I also found a Bushmaster 20" in like-new condition from a local guy selling it on GunBroker.com! I went to look at it and couldn't believe the guy was just asking $550 for it. I offered $500, he took $525 and threw in two magazines to boot. I am definitely a happy camper. I went back to TGS to get a Hogue grip for it, and a case. In all, I spent about $900 today, including $60 for my CCW class at TGS! YES, I'm finally going to do it, and now that its in the works, I can hardly wait. :D

No doubt... I had to whip it out of its case again tonight just to be sure it didn't fade away through the night! ;) I definitely got a good bang for my buck there, and the rifle is pristine inside and out. Yeah, we're comin' out for the DBS! :D
