Has anyone been to the "Family Shooting Academy" in Green bay?
To be honest.....I have never been to an indoor range except for the one in the middle school back home for rifle team, and that was decades ago. But as far as a commercial indoor range? I've never ben to one My son will be home on leave at the end of the month and is bringing his girlfriend (native Hawaiian) who shoots also. I want to take them someplace warm and comfortable to shoot. With both of them not used to the cold, it would probably be better not to head out to the outdoor range we have set up. He bought his first pistol the last time he was home, two years ago and only got to put two mags through it. He will have more time this year and I want him to be able to enjoy it. Is the place any good? Anything I should know? What targets would be the best to use? Thanks! |

Been there once or twice... Good facility, well equipped, digital lane controls. FFL and (I heard) SOT. Cost was average. My impression was appropriate level of safety focus. We shot 5.56 AR and handgun. Staff seems fine / knowledgable (i.e. did not strike me as gun-counter BSers).
I like splatter targets. Available at range or you can buy bulk cheaper ahead of time. Don't forget eye pro & good ear pro. |

Their site gives a guide for target size to bring, I just didn't know what would be the easiest to see down a lane. "Digital Lane Controls".....What is that? |

Not sure if that's the correct name, but each lane has a gizmo where you input desired target position, eg 7m, home, etc and the trolley goes there. Also shows time remaining, etc. on a display. As opposed to the type where you just have a switch to run it fwd/back and try not to crash at the end...

I had a membership there for 2 years although I've lapsed now. It's a nice place - neat target control systems, good ventilation, friendly enough staff, reasonable rates for FFL transfer, and usually not TOO busy. The only reason I'm not a member anymore is that it's just too expensive for what I get out of it. I've been shooting more rifles lately so 25 yards doesn't cut it and the outdoor ranges in the area cost literally 1/10 as much for a year membership.
They have a variety of targets for sale there for $1 each or 6 for $5 I think. If you want to bring your own targets they need to be the right size, which is pretty large. They also have ammo for sale, although yet again it's quite expensive and guns for rent. |

They run an IDPA/USPSA league every other Sunday so I shoot there often from now until it warms up. As far as indoor ranges go it's pretty nice, very clean and the noise level is way lower than others I've been to. I can't speak for the pricing though as I just pay entry fees for competitions or mooch off of people's groupons if they want to go shoot. The electronic target system is pretty handy as well.
As far as targets for the rails they have cardboard you can staple paper targets to that keep the height correct for the berm and avoid hits to the clamp mechanism. Basically, it's not bad. You could do far, far worse for an indoor range. Also show up for the league, we need more people bringing the heat

| I went to Family shooting academy for the first time about a month ago. My wife and i where impressed with the professionalism of every one there. only complaint my wife had was it could get loud, but that was probibly due to the big pistols being shoot a few stall's down from us. |

What time does the IDPA stuff start on Sundays and what's the entry fee? Anything to win? http://www.familyshootingacademy.com/book.htm We get there by 5, usually we're walking out to the range at 5:30 pretty on the dot. Runs until 9:30 to 10 depending on how many people show up. Bring a chair. It's about 20 bucks plus tax to enter and it's all online if you'd like. You get nothing by winning other than your name at the top of the scoreboard and the bragging rights that you beat me and the few other regulars that are always winning IDPA/USPSA isn't about the prizes if you're serious. It's about getting that winner's high for 10 seconds and training every day to grab at another 10 seconds. That and screwing around socializing at the range. If you want prizes get really good at 3-gun, believe me. |

Most indoor ranges are loud as all hell. FSA is actually pretty good compared to other places I've been but you should still double up on protection if you're with other people. |

It was a good time. My son and I both enjoyed it.
The facility is very nice and I plan on going back with my wife. I have had family members check it out also after hearing how much I liked it. The staff there came across very friendly.....as a matter of fact, everyone, including the patrons seemed very nice and conscious of all safety rules. Overall a good time and I will be back. |
