I'm going to be moving to Madison in a few weeks and I had a couple of questions. First, how long does Wisconsin require to establish residency for the CCW? Second, does anybody have any suggestions on nearby stores and/or places to shoot?

Thanks

Do you mean stores like gunshops?

Gander Mountain just past the far East side has a decent indoor range.

Thanks, and yes, I meant gunshops. I wasn't exactly specific there, sorry about that.

There are a few big box stores that sell guns, then kitchen table FFLs in Madison.  The actual gun shops in Madison are long gone.
The out lying suburbs and cites have some though. Oregon, Mt Horeb, Sun Prairie,  Cross Plains, Cottage Grove have small gunshops.

Once you get a WI DL, you can get a permit.

Thanks! I was hoping that was why i wasn't finding a time requirement.

FYI... Hunting & fishing licenses require 30 days full time residency before they can be issued... if the clerk checks the issuance date on your DL, mine didn't (but that was 24 yrs ago before the system was computerized and they issued DNR numbers). First time buyers need to show an ID like a DL, after that you just need your DNR number - which you'll get when you buy your 1st license.

Max creek outdoors in Oregon (10 miles south of Madison) has a good indoor range.  There is a public range at Yellowstone lake state park, about 45 minutes drive time southwest of Madison. There are multiple private ranges around the area. If you want long range, look to Lodi, out to 1,000 yards.  If you are not currently living in a full on communist community, mentally prepare yourself for Dane county, it is libtard central. Oh yes, if you reload, Recob's in Sauk City/Praire du Sac will be your best bet(along with Cabelas in Sun Praire) for supplies. If you hunt, there are public areas near by, but they get crowded fast.

I go to college in platteville, (SW WI) and regularly travel almost 40 minutes to the yellowstone range. Great range for free! (7M, 50M, and 100M ranges.) As well as a crappy walk through bow course.

Great lakes outdoors (technically oregon, but closer to fitchburg, WAY at the southern end of fish hatchery road) has a outdoor range. They're a small gun shop. Weird thing is they charge $50 for transfers, but if you order something through gungenie or buds, they're the 2nd lowest price usually of all the out the door quotes (lowest is the NAPA store in mt. horeb).

As for private ranges, there are a few in the area. I go to Stoughton Conserveration Club. Kinda fuddy in that no rapid fire, but it's OK, especially on weekdays when few people if any, are around.

There's gander as has been mentioned, but gander is everyones shit list pretty much. There is cabelas in Sun Prairie, no range though. Friendly staff though!

Recobs probably is the best source of reloading supplies in all, but cabelas has an OK stock.

I'd recommend you not live in madison proper, but one of the other towns outside of it if you can.

Thanks everybody, now I got a good list of places to check out. Seems like a lot better variety than here in Tuscaloosa too, especially with the ranges since there's more than three within an hour and a half. And yeah, we're trying to find a place outside of Madison itself if at all possible, I've spent the last 9 years in one college town, that's more than enough.

That's what everyone says...but in reality all those big box places (Gander, Cabelas, Bass Pro, etc) all have pretty much the same price on everything.

Madison/Dane county is the liberal lions den.  Be prepared for that, maybe watch the local news with the volume off.  The Wednesday edition of the State Journal newspaper has the Cap Times magazine in there.  You may suffer an aneurism from the shear mega dose of lib derp.  Just be forewarned.

Common, Madison isn't that bad.  College freshman are always pretty cute before their first winter.

Welcome to WI.

Buy a snow shovel or snowblower, 3 bags of sidewalk/driveway salt, and a blaze orange winter cap by October and you will fit right in.

Look up leotrainer1 on here.  He owns shooting systems in Verona, which is just south of Madison.  Great guy, and a SOT, too.  He'll get you whatever you need.

Welcome aboard!

Drive some liberals nuts.

Be sure to not get drug down by the big city. Be sure to hit the north woods & see lake superior. Superior, Bay Field & others along the north shore are beautiful.

If you like fishing the NW area, where I am, have lakes everywhere.

The Mississippi is worth a look also.

September, best time of the year.  I have a serious case of curiosity in how all the girls over in Edina, MN keep things together in the winter.
