Just moved across the boarder up here, from Iron Mountain into Spread Eagle. Still a Wolverine, Lions fan, (not much to be proud of there lately, is there?) but thought I would introduce myself here and say hey.
I thought Michigan had a some unsavory laws like a pseudo registration on all hand guns, (they call it a safety inspection) but one thing that's putting a burr under my saddle is this 48 hour waiting period in Wisconsin. I live up here in the sticks, not a lot of good selection locally, so I go down to Green Bay shopping. If I find something, I have to go back home wait the 48 hours, it's more like a week because I work and have to wait until the next week end to go pick up my pistol AND pay for another $50.00 in gasoline. Any movement out there to repeal this? Here's the reply from my new state Rep. Rob Swearingen; "Mark, Thank you for reaching out to my office to vent your frustrations. After speaking with Legislative Council, they informed me that the waiting period is Wisconsin is 48 hours. I understand that this still does not help your situation much. I understand your frustrations for constant background checks for every time you want to buy a firearm. It is apparent after reading your e-mail that you are an avid gun collector. It is unfortunate that these laws adversely affect a responsible gun owner like yourself. I don’t disagree with you, however, after talking with several of my colleagues in the Capitol, I do not believe that there is enough support in the Legislature to appeal the 48 hour waiting period. Thanks for your input." Rob |
Welcome to WI. It boggles my mind that those who wrote our CC law just a few years ago did not include an exemption to that bullshit for CC licensees. I think it's a dumbass, feel good law, that does nothing but please the anti-gunners by discouraging handgun sales. Make no mistake, it does have a negative effect on handgun sales, as you already alluded to. Who wants to make 2 trips to a gun shop 100 miles away? Or even 25 miles away?
But I see no action at an attempt to repeal it by gun retailers, who are losing more business than I think they realize. No petition drives, no organized letter writing campaigns, nothing. Swearingen is my Rep too. I got a similar response. Just as I did from his 3 predecessors.
STOOOOOOOPID law... can you tell you hit my "hot button" with the 48hr wait? But enough griping, Welcome to WI, you're no longer a Yooper, now a cheesehead. |

Welcome to WI! You are from my neck of the woods, at least where I grew up. Went to school in Florence, my wife is from Kingsford, and her brother and parents still live up there, her Mom in Spread Eagle. We get up there pretty often. I'm sure you already know this, but just as a reminder, stay away from the Golden Nugget!! |
