For a while now I tend to look through Youtube and watch crash videos and such. I have noticed how many people seem to have dash cams. I started searching Ebay for them and there seem to be lots of them for sale. Does anyone here use one aside from law enforcement of course? If so, how do you like them? Which one do you have?

I've mounted my GoPro to my windshield but they don't work so well in the dark so if you do a lot of night driving you need to find something with infrared.  I've been meaning to upgrade to something better just because you never know.

I used to have this webpage bookmarked, but I guess I deleted it, but it was a cam that recorded both front and rear views, with some infrared. It also recorded speed, compass direction, etc all on the picture. About $300, but that was like 3 years ago, so it's probably outdated by today's standards.

Make sure you get one that records sound too, and possibly wide angle, so you can record the cop that pulls you over and is at your side window.

You'll also want one that can record in blocks, like 5 minutes, to make things easier to find. Date/time stamp. Some kind of night vision would be great, as would  HD.

This topic comes up occasionally in GD if you want to try that.

I've been thinking about a 300W for a while, but haven't spent the money yet.

There is a tacked thread about this in the Safes and Home Security forum.

It's in the armory.  Go check it out.

I own a POV. It mounts nicely on your bangstick or on your dash. It has tactical applications too (looking over walls, around corners, etc)

I had it mounted to the dash of our MRAP which worked great with double sided tape (the foam cut down on vibration).

As a truck driver I love them! Get some pretty good stuff. Been meaning to upgrade to a better camera. Just haven't gotten around to it yet.

No, that's why I slowed down to make sure it didn't end up worse. He ended right on the edge of the left lane on the other side. Once it did the full 180 pretty much roll straight in reverse.

Lots of really expensive cams you guys have posted. Has anyone tried the less expensive cams? $75-$100 cams? I know you get what you pay for, but I am wondering how will they might work, so if I don't want to keep using it, I am not out a lot of money.

Or you could sell it and still not lose a lot of money.

Don't have $300-$500 to start with for this experiment.

What's the point of using one?  Proof you didn't cause a collision?  Posting collisions on YouTube?  Insurance discounts?

It provides a digital witness to what happened.  If shows who caused the accident, provides police with video of the other driver, shows your speed, the direction from which the impact came, etc.

I was the victim of a hit-n-run before I had my truck wired up like it is now (it was a big part of the reason for the cameras).  VERY fortunately for me, a camera mounted on a nearby building caught the action, and the police were able to ID the other driver.  Saved me a deductible, and thousands of dollars in repairs that my insurance would have had to eat.

I was already a believer in security cameras... but that was just one more example.  The video doesn't lie.

Remember George Zimmerman's reaction when the detective in his case bluffed during questioning, and said "you know somebody was videotaping the whole thing..."?

He said "Oh... thank God!"

That is how I felt.

I purchased one last year at a truck stop after a friend was stopped at a stop sign, the guy in front of him backed into him, and then claimed my friend hit him at the sign.  Turns out it was a scam- either pay me cash now or I call the police and I'll collect from your insurance company.

Mine is used when I'm on vacation.  I have NOT seen or heard of this in WI, but I have heard of it in CA, AZ, NM, and other southwestern states.  I should probably use mine more often out here.

This is the one I've been eyeing.  Seems to get decent reviews for the price point.

It is, but I am short on cash, need to buy a set of tires for my truck and wanted to "try" this out. Should having a dash cam be an effective item then I will upgrade.

I have read that many of the cheap ones don't last long, but I am experimenting at this point.

Well now I'm interested. I was going to ask what use it would be but it sounds like they're more useful than I originally anticipated.

Think about every driver's worst nightmare...  you're driving through a residential neighborhood, and a small child darts out from behind a parked car...  or an intoxicated illegal walking on a dark road late at night, who stumbles into the path of your vehicle...

Now you've got an injured/dead person on your hands... and in the case of the child, a family that may be pretty damned vengeful.  If they can convince the jury you were speeding, or otherwise didn't take due care to avoid the collision, they could take everything you own.  Might be nice to have a video that shows your actual speed, and how little time you had to react.

Ditto for the dead illegal guy... particularly if the usual assortment of community activists start painting you as a sheet-wearing racist who deliberately ran down a brown person.

Sure would be nice to have video in either of those scenarios.

I just didn't realize they were so advanced. When I think dash cam I think of dinky camera with low field of view pointed forward. If you stick in the money thermal cameras with wide FOVs sound slightly better

This is why I am doing it. I would love to have the money to pony up for a really nice one, but at this point I just don't have it.

The video I posted earlier came from a $60 very basic camera I found on Amazon. I found out very quickly how nice it is to have it. You'll find yourself wanting to upgrade to better soon! You don't need hollywood quality but anything is better than nothing.
