Anyone know of some good public land near the Fox Valley for ground hog and other varmint hunting? There are only few species you may hunt year round on land which is not yours. Coyotes, opossum, skunk, weasel, wild hog, Russian Wild boar, rats, chipmunks and field mice are about it. Ground hogs are definitely protected unless you are a land owner and they are doing damage. |

Add snowshoe hares to that list. Coyote hunting has become extremely popular nationwide the last few years, WI being no exception. Lots of public land up north, lots of coyotes too. But don't come up north to hunt them like you see on Predator Quest and other outdoor channel shows. This isn't the wide open spaces like out west, where you can test your long range skills with a varmint rifle. Most hunting up here is very close range in heavy woods, using carbines with irons or red-dots, or shotguns with #4 buck. eta: the best time of year to hunt coyotes up north is winter. Visibility is 1000% better in the woods after the leaves are gone and snow covers the ground. A "secret" tactic is hunt at night on a clear night with a full moon, on frozen lakes. All white clothing is a must. The more poopular the lake is with ice fishermen, the more the coyotes will cruise it every night, looking for cast aside fish & minnows. Unless the lake is one with no shoreline development, shotguns are your only safe choice. (there are some lakes in the Nicolet with no private shorelines, where it's safe to use rifles) |
