| Has anyone ever gone kayaking on lake superior? Furthermore, has anyone used a guide service to kayak on lake Superior? The wife and I were starting to look into it and are looking for some opinions. |

A friend and I did a self-guided 4 day trip to the Apostle Islands a few years back. We started near Red Cliff, paddled to an island, hiked around, paddled to another to camp and repeated that the next day. Watch out for some of the fishing boats, they aren't really watching for kayaks. Make sure you add in a few extra days to your trip in case it gets windy. You could get stuck on an island for a day until it calms down. 4 foot swells are nasty in a 17 foot boat. It's hard to roll a loaded touring boat so practice self rescue. I used a 17 Necky Looksha IV with a rudder. We didn't have trouble with bears but others have. Keep your food up in the trees. It was an awesome trip. I can't wait to go back.
Madeline Island is worth stopping at for a day. |

I have no first hand experience with SPOT. It seems like a great device for keeping your base updated with waypoint progress. I don't dislike SPOT.
That said, SPOT is not a real locator beacon. It's a packet messenger device with limited functionality. Users report updates that never went through, or took many hours to go through. I'd certainly be glad to have a SPOT over nothing in a bad situation, but for kayaking unfamiliar open waters .... a true emergency beacon that rescuers can home in on is what I would recommend to the OP. |
