Has anyone here ever tried to register with  WI DNR, an aluminum jon boat that has no serial number, nor name of manufacturer, anywhere on the boat?

There's no ID tag on transom, no numbers stamped into hull. Nothing... plus it's been painted and re-painted camo several times, so a maker's name decal would be long gone. It's never been registered before, AFAIK. It's only a 10' jon, and I bought it out of some guy's front yard for $100, about 15 yrs ago (do have a hand-written receipt). I use it for duck hunting when we have to "carry-in" a boat. Too small for average outboard, and trolling motor requires a heavy deep-cycle battery... so we just use oars.

I came across a lightweight (12lbs), 1.5 HP 2-cycle gasoline "trolling motor", that's fricken ideal for use on the 10' jon. It's pretty much a "weed-wacker" with a prop. But to use it on the jon legally, I must "register" the boat. On-line boat registration app at the DNR website wants manufacturer name & hull number. "Don't know" & "none" would be what I'd have to fill out. Don't think that'll fly.

Anybody been here, done this? I'm thinking, I'll probably have to bring the boat to a DNR local office.

How old is the boat? Newer boats (since mid-80's, I think) will have the mandatory, stamped tag on on the back of the transom. If your boat doesn't have one, the DNR will assign you a number, I think. Its in the boating regs, so you can look em up online, I'm too lazy to get up and find the book on my nightstand. :)

The sailboat I bought last year doesn't have the tag, but had no problems getting the title transferred (other than finding out I needed BOTH persons to sign the title).

I picked up a 17.5' aluminum canoe last year for $30 (small, CSB in there). It has the tag. Never bothered with a receipt or anything, and being a canoe, haven't registered it.

I registered a mid 1960's aluminum boat a couple years ago.  I don't remember specifics to what I put on the forms.  They did issue me number that I then stamped into the boat.

The DNR has a chat feature right on their website that's pretty good.  I would try that before I load the boat up and take it anywhere.  Good luck.

One thing I do know... boats less than 16' don't have titles in WI. I've got two others, both 14', with current registrations, and no 'titles'. This one's never been titled nor registered, so there's no person on record to sign anything.

The guy who was selling it worked at the local landfill, and I'm fairly certain someone brought it there for disposal, and he snagged it instead. There was a 4" gash in the bottom that was freshly welded (hasn't leaked since I got it).

Just like your canoe, I never tried to register it, because I never anticipated a motor of any kind being on it. It's so small & light, I carry it on the roof rack of my pick-up, and I put it up there by myself. Then I found the Cruise N' Carry outboard last fall, and it was given to me by a customer because it didn't run (no spark), and ignition parts weren't available (obsolete). But a friend of mine has a bunch of salvaged parts for those old motors and I gave it to him to check out.... he replaced the ignition module & spark plug, cleaned the carb, and it runs like a champ. My total investment in the motor is buying a breakfast for my friend with the parts.
