I'm going to make a drive down to the Madison area to visit Vortex Optics in Middleton tomorrow.  Anything else of interest in the area before I head back home?

In Middleton itself... this is a pretty neat park http://www.pheasantbranch.org/
They have a big Indian Mound there.

ETA - made link hot.

The WI Veterans Museum is pretty cool, and the Vilas Zoo is a pretty damn good zoo considering it's free to get in.

Driving from where?

Northwest, then Capital Brewery in Middleton

Wolershiem winery in Sauk area

From Northeast..

Then Ale Asylum off E Wash.

There's a wide variety of foreign food places in the area.

Gun related, dunno, Gander?  They have an indoor pistol range now.

I'll be coming in from La Crosse and will be traveling back to Eau Claire afterwards.  Was hoping to visit some gun related places.  Wish Midwest Industries was a bit closer to Madison.

Ummm duh! The National Mustard Museum!  Its more of a gift shop, but if you like mustard, they have some tasty stuff.  I work in Middleton, so you might see a BFL roaming around...

Go to the opposite end of the building and checkout Eagle Optics for binos and spotting/telescopes.  Great place to checkout nice stuff.

They've recently remodeled. The new offices/showroom now have most of their scopes and binos. Pretty cool office.

I second stopping at PT Firearms. They're about 5 minutes down the road from Vortex. Ask Jimmy, or Tom, Shamus, etc.. they all know where it's at.

The best scenery happens towards the end of the spring semester. Bascom Hill on a Friday afternoon in May...

I live in Middleton and had no idea Vortex was in Middleton.  When cruising around town, I always see the same truck with a vortex sticker on it, always just thought it was a hunter or something.  Now I know better after looking them up to see where they are located.  I need to stop in there some day and check it out.

Do they just charge MSRP at the showroom?

+1000  The Veterans Museum is a must see.  Maybe one of these days I'll be able to get through the Iraq/Afganistan section without it getting too "dusty" in there and I have to go outside for some fresh air.

Unique may be able to chime in here, since I have not been in there since the remodel, but historically you could not purchase direct from the showroom.  It was either through a dealer or distribution.  I am unclear about their current policy.

Either way it is a great way to actually look through the optics they have so you can make an informed decision.

Stopped in at Vortex Optics & Eagle Optics today and got to check out some nice spotting & rifle scopes.  Was nice to take a look at everything I wanted to see in their lineup.

they prefer that you use their dealers. Closest one is in Cross Plains. They charge less than MSRP. I believe they only charge MAP pricing there.

You still can't buy from them direct, just look at the products.

We avoid Madistan at all cost. Close as we get is going by on the freeway to Eau Claire to pick up or drop off the daughter at UWEC. We do stop at the Pine Cone truck stop for grub from time to time!

I love the pine cone.  The eclairs they have in the "gas station" are the bomb, though they are like 4 meals.
