So, last night, needed to pick up some Kerosene. Forgot my kero can, so grabbed the gas can I had in the truck. Now, I know gasoline has to be in a red can. But....since when does kero HAVE to be in a BLUE container?
I know blue is typically kero, yellow is diesel, red is gas. However, I have yet to find any state law specifically that kerosene can ONLY go in blue containers. It DOES state that it is not permissable to put kero in a red container. However, I was told they would only allow me to put kero in a blue can, per law. Actual law, or company policy misstated as "law"? Ref: http://dsps.wi.gov/er/pdf/bst/ProgramLetters_PL/ER-BST-PL-ContainersStoring&TransportMotorFuels.pdf |

from your link
. (c) No kerosene, fuel oil or similar liquids having a flash point of 100º F or more may be filled into any portable container or portable tank colored red. Note : The Comm 10 Code adopts the National Standard NFPA 30 – Flammable and Combustible Liquids Code and NFPA 30A – Motor Fuel Facility Dispensing and Repair Garages. Chapter 4 of NFPA 30 includes more detailed container specifications. Chapter 9 of NFPA 30A includes additional operational and dispensing requirements So its law ....... Congrats criminal |

from your link Maybe I misworded my question. I understand that it's not lawful to put kero in a red container. My contention is that there is no law requiring me to put kero in any specific color container, as long as it is not red. Fleet Farm stated it MUST be blue, but I see no law specifically stating such. Or is that covered under "National Standard NFPA 30 – Flammable and Combustible Liquids Code" ? Seems odd that blue would be a requirement, when you can purchase kero over the counter in clear, black, and other colored containers. |

No i dont think if HAS to be blue I just dont show them the container They asked over the intercom... I paused for a second....said red. They said it HAS to be blue. I probably should have just said blue, but....oh well. I have plenty of spare kero at home, just figured while I was in town, i'd fill up a can, versus wading through the snow to refill it at home. FWIW, I've NEVER been asked what color container before. Not sure if they saw it, or something new they started doing. This was at the Appleton FF, south side gas station. |

Did that with a pre-ban MFC. I also have several blue kero cans. I just forgot them at home, so figured flammable liquids in a flammable liquid container... good enough. If it's their store policy, that's fine. If it's an actual law, I'd like a reference to satisfy my curiousity. I tend to get a little grumpy when someone says "THAT'S ILLEGAL!!!" but has absolutely nothing to back up their statement. If I had a dollar for every time someone told me MGs and "silencers" were illegal...... |
