Looking for the good or bad about this area.I'm thinking about retiring here soon.I don't give a crap about the area for what it is known for.
I like it for the convienence for shopping, and the eateries.I will have my own range for shooting. And,it is still close for family still in fibland. Thanks in advance for your input. |
| My family has a cabin on Buffalo Lake in Montello which is 25 minutes away from the Dells. We love going into the Dells to hit up Nigs and MooseJaw for beers and then the casino. A lot of places downtown Dells close for the winter but there are still enough open in the winter to have some fun. Plus there are a lot of great little supper clubs in the surrounding towns. One of my friends just bought a place in Montello for retirement as he likes being close to the Dells and only 50 min from Madison. In the summer the Dells can get crazy on the weekends but nothing too bad especially if you are living outside the city limits. |
| Born and raised just west of the Dells in Reedsburg. Currently live in the country between Reedsburg and Baraboo. I assume you are going to have acreage if you are going to have a range. Land is cheaper if you go slightly further North. The people are really diverse, Left, Right, blue colar, white collar, farmer but, for the most part are live and let live. Hunting is great. Several sportsman's clubs with trap shooting and some with rifle ranges. |

Quoted: inconveniences of living in a tourist trap comes to mind. How are the property taxes? Between $21 and $26 per $1000 assessed (depending on which county you're in- Wisconsin Dells straddles 4 counties), so a $200k (assessed) home would be around $4.5k per year. |

The 'tourist trap inconveniences' are pretty localized, concentrated and easy to avoid if you live a couple miles outside of the Downtown Dells proper.
Biggest issues are probably the crime and drug use by seasonal carnies, and pretty heavy traffic on the main highways. Summer is the worst. Again, not hard to avoid the bulk of it for the most part. OP-tell us more about this "range" of yours... |

Too many south of the border types there already. lol... It's a tourist trap. Everything is priced accordingly. All the bullshit of the big city.... in a smaller city. Nice place to visit, but I would not want to live there. Price is relative, considering OP's from Fibland everything probably looks cheap. Last time I was at Mt Olympus saw some illannoy people giddy over the 'cheap' $20 gift shop t-shirts. Hate the Dells in summer. Crowded and congested, feels like you're in an ant colony. Left hand turns are near impossible due to traffic and there seems to be a fender bender every couple of blocks. Many of the seasonal carnies are Scandinavian for some reason. Over in Sweden do kids dream about when they go to college they will spend summers in America, selling tickets to a mini-putt-putt at the Wisconsin Dells? |

Sad thing is, it drives up prices for locals. But I guess that happens. Nice place to visit, but I'd never want to live there. Shooting range on the northeast side isn't too bad either, but maxes out at 200 yards. |

ALDI'S, Walmart, Walgreen's, Menards, Pierce's -similar prices as anywhere else in the Country, pretty much. |
