Hey guys, Im thinking about putting a 300 blackout upper together, What are the pros and cons of this round and reloading this round.
What are your opinions of this caliber. Anyone know where I can pick up a barrel for one also? |

I looked into this as well. I want to build one as a deer rifle. What I found was shooting over 200 yards can be more difficult than using a standard (say .30-06) round due to the lower pressures resulting in lower velocities. Great stopping power with some awesome "hunting" projectiles available for it. The ammo is becoming more readily available at the big stores. Your mom and pop gun shops may not have much but you can (or could have before the panic) find it anywhere online for a good price.
For me, the big set back is the range. I don't see myself shooting much over 200 yards much but I don't want to be limited by my round of choice. The other rounds in the running are the 6.5 Grendel(?) and the 6.8 spc(?). Both of these have better velocities with acceptable knock down power. The downside of them is a complete dedicated upper. The .300 has the advantage of using 5.56 mags/BCG. |

It expands just fine at 300yd velocities. It has as much energy at 300 yards that a "Hunting" round .357 has at the muzzle. Unless you are hunting a very large open field, you are not going to be hunting WI Whitetail at 300 yards. |

I was using an AK as my brush gun, it was heavy and the optics I had for it sucked in the brush, so i ditched it for a 300 build. I got my barrel from Sota Arms for about 150. Brass form Silver State Armory, don't know what their status is these days...

I've seen them but how's the quality of the sota arms barrels? I can hit a 'pie plate' at 200M with irons from the prone unsupported, that's all the barrel I need. I took the rifle apart to mount a free float rail and duracoat it, when I get it back together I will mount a scope and I plan to 'clock' some reloads through it so I'll have an idea of just how accurate it can be. I looked at higher price barrels and couldn't justify spending more for a brush gun. C361 Stan |

I just finished assembling my wife's 300BLK tonight. Wife likes hunting with her AR, though she wasn't too impressed with the lack of blood trail last year when she got her buck with 5.56. I suppose it didin't really matter though, her deer only went about three paces and dropped - but it gave me an excuse to build another upper Ordered the barrel from AR15hardware.com $159 / $174.65 shipped to me here in WI They show them in stock right now too... I ordered back on the 17th of Jan, it shipped on the 23rd, and was delivered on the 29th. Barrel is a 16" 1/8 twist, not chrome lined though...

I'm building one right now for when my Tax Stamp comes back for my SBR... I'm having trouble decided between barrels, though. I know I'll pretty much shoot subs at 100 yards and in, but I'd like the length to go out past 300 yards if possible (meaning I'd want at least a 10,5"). I really like the look of the 8" barrel and 12" handguard with the can sticking out, though.
Anyways, I see you get 100-150fps per inch of barrel with the full loads up to about a 14.5", then the gains drop off after that. With the 208gr Match or A-Max (BC of .620-.650) even at 2200fps that's easily a 600 yard round reliably, even if it there is a ton of drop. |

I have decided that an 8" barrel with a can or an integrally suppressed 16" upper will get the job done. If I want longer ranges and harder hitting than that, I will just add a second upper.
I think ranging from fun to my typical deer ranges, an 8" will be just fine. Of course it works for HD fine too. I have friends who build AR's that have been whacking hogs at night for a year or two with guns like this and they do just fine. The nice thing about the 16" is no SBR tax needed and I honestly can't see myself ever shooting an 8" barrel without a can. |

30-221, 300 whisper, 300blk is a fun low recoil(subsonic) round.
You can run supersonic stuff of course but I think the 7.62x40mm is better for that. Velocities for 125 gn bullets were 2000-2400fps IIRC depending on barrel length and rifling. I did make a load w 155 gn lapua match bullets @ 2000 fps (20" bolt gun) and shot them at 600yds just to see. I think it was around 125 1/4moa clicks but I did start hitting the target consistently. For reloading you can neck up 221 fireball or trim and size 223 brass. Though 30 Cal bullets can get pretty pricing especially the heavy ones. B-Man |

They are nice barrels, for the price it will not disappoint. If they ever get the melonite or stainless ones back in stock when I have money, I'll get one of those too. |
