Dear Mr. NYHCx516x:

I share your grief and outrage over the horrific events in Newtown, Connecticut. My heart goes out to the families impacted by this senseless tragedy. It is baffling to think what could cause an individual to inflict this kind of pain on fellow human beings, let alone defenseless children.

In the wake of such violence, we naturally want answers. We also want to know what can be done to prevent such tragedies in the future. As the President said, no set of laws will prevent every future horrific act of violence or eliminate evil from our society, but we can do better. As someone who sponsored the Brady bill, I support reasonable measures to keep guns out of the hands of convicted felons and the mentally ill. I look forward to having an honest debate about these issues in the weeks and months ahead, and will keep in mind your views during this process.

Thanks again for contacting me.

Sincerely,
F. JAMES SENSENBRENNER, JR.

There's that word again... "reasonable". Or the word "sensible" is used. The problem is, there's a vast disparity in what people on either side of gun control issues consider to be "reasonable" and/or  "sensible".

So basically, he said nothing.

He explained that in his town hall meeting.

After Reagan was shot (with a .22lr) the majority of the members wanted some kind of gun controls in forced to keep guns out of the hands of "kooks". The lesser of all evils at the time was the “NIC” (National Instant Criminal Background Check System) and that is the part of the Brady bill he talks of. He stated that by voting for that it stopped more oppressive ideas.

It's the word "reasonable" that I don't like. I support keeping guns from criminals & the mentally ill too, as I'm sure we all do. It's how that gets accomplished without infringing on my rights that concerns me. What "they" consider to be "reasonable" is not the same as I do, in most cases. Do I think NICS was reasonable? Yes, I do, because it eliminated the Brady law waiting periods on a federal level, but still manages to keep guns from criminals to a certain extent by preventing "over-the-counter" sales to them, without infringing too much on my rights. That's how I'd define "reasonable".

Do I think banning certain items for all (ie. AWB), because a very few mis-use them, is reasonable? Hell no! Does he? Who knows. I don't like "political double-talk" like this. Take a stance, dammit, right or wrong... so others know where you stand. Sometimes you've got to choose a side to stand with... this is one of those times.

Time to write him and tell him that if he supports further restrictions on my rights, than I can not support him as my elected representative.
Your job is at stake here Mr. Sensenbrenner.
We are watching you.

received the same "canned" email yesterday.

IMHO, senselessbrenner is a tool and a master of doublespeak.

over the years I have written him quite a few times about a lot of issues (not just gun control) and every reply was the exact same double speak that puts plenty of words on paper but really answers nothing.

he is a shining example of why there should be term limits for all elected officials.
