Came across a Craiglist ad of someone looking for broken trail cams to use as decoy's.

Can someone explain this to me?  People now have to set a trail cam to monitor other trail cams, or something?

I have heard from several people in my area that they have had cameras stolen recently.  I suppose they are trying to put up a decoy and hide a real cam in a tree to catch the thief!(?)

Decoys makes sense if they are having theft issues.

Or they are returning them to the mfg to exchange them for new camera.

Cuddeback did that a while ago, offered credit per camera towards a new one.

Yup. That and they put them in plain sight, locked to a tree with a padlock, to deter tresspassers. You see a camera used for this, you don't know if it's real or not. Just like "dummy" security cammeras in stores. It works.

edit: But in some cases, trespassers have vandalized the "dummy" cameras, so real ones were hidden to record the dummy camera areas. I've heard of several people getting fined because of not knowing there was a real camera set up to record them messing with the dummy. Guess who else does this? The DNR.
