My 7 year old has shown an interest in hunting and really enjoyed dove hunting with me so i asked if she was interested in going deer hunting. She was smiling pretty big when she said yes so the planning began.
Took her to some public land during the antler less hunt where its usually pretty calm and i typically see doe, as suspected not a sole on the 400 plus acre property. Took the 30ish minute walk glassing the open fields for deer and answering lots of random questions. Get to our spot, get sat down. Kid starts playing with some rocks after about 10 minutes lol. 5 minutes later only 15 mins on stand from my left comes a doe. Half trotting half running. I tell the kid, here comes one. Tried to stop it with a bleat, no luck, shot at her on the run and she stumbled at the shot. Kid was pretty excited, but thought because it didn't go down we didn't get her. Looked for blood in the field for a good while and nothing. No blood where she crossed into the woods either...now Im starting to think maybe i just scared her with the shot. Then bout 15 more feet i find a single drop of blood, bright red and bubbles. That got her fired up. I ended up hitting about 3 inch behind the ribs and got some guts but destroyed the liver and one lung on the way out. The blood trail really opened up after a while and found her about 100 yards from the shot. Long story just for a doe, but this was a memory ill never forget. Trying to post pics on my phone...stand by |

My boy is 14 months old when this happened.
Me: Are you going hunting with daddy? Boy: Yup! Me: Does mom know? Boy: Yup! Me: Really? Boy: Yup! Me: I am going to have to check with her. Boy: < silence > That is cool! While I know the above conversation my boy did not really know what I was asking, I hope I am so lucky that he shares my interests. |

Well done. My youngest daughter hunted with me a few seasons, back in the mid 90's, before she went away to college. She was 14-15 back then. Unfortunately, those two deer seasons were amongst the coldest I can remember in the 4 decades I've been hunting. I spent a small fortune on warm hunting clothes for her, but she froze her ass off (I did too, to be honest), and she decided that was enough for her. I spent most of my time building fires in the woods to warm her up, as this was before the "pop-up blind" and heaters became available. The bathroom issue was big too. We were hunting on public land in the Nicolet, she wore insulated blaze coveralls and she refused to take them off to go potty in the woods, and the nearest gas station was miles away.

Very cool. I always like taking my kids with me. They are are like a good luck charm. She brought you luck too. Congrats on the doe and hopefully a life long hunting partner That's what everyone is calling her now. She told me in no uncertain terms on the drive over that we would be getting a deer that hunt. Lol, i said don't get your hopes up too much. I looked at her after finding the first sign of blood and realizing it was lung blood and said, your right, we are getting a deer today. |
