[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Candidates for senate (Page 1 of 2)
Posted: 6/28/2012 9:44:55 AM EDT
| I just talked to all 4 candidate offices for US senate here in Wisconsin. All of them are for Government interference in health care. Some talk about changing the laws and repealing OBAMACARE. Thompson was the worst however. Big government Rhino. This year We have to be active and elect the best person for the job. Sadly Tommy is to old and a Rhino. |

Baldwin is a liberal fruitcake, and Tommy has the very best chance to kick her butt in November. He'd have to do or say something really outrageous to change that. Tommy is washed up, fake Conservative. He will not get my vote again. And if he wins the primary, and it's a Tommy vs Tammy Senate election, then what will you do? I know you won't vote for Baldwin. |
|
I spoke to Mark Neumann personally a few days ago and I liked what he had to say. He at least seems to get it when it comes to the issue of federal spending.
Is he for some federal involvement with healthcare? I didn't ask. Is he dead set on killing Obamacare? Oh yeah. I don't doubt that his first move in the Senate would be to go after Obamacare like a rabid honey badger high on bath salts. Honestly, this "electability" hand-wringing is killing the Right. First McCain and now Romney? The Left doesn't seem to mind putting up all-out socialists. Why do we keep backing down when it comes to putting up candidates that actually stand for our beliefs? Does anyone really thing that Tammy Baldwin is a strong candidate, anyways? P.S. - why does Tommy's ad say "STOP" in quotes? Is there some fine print somewhere saying: offer not valid in D.C. or after November 6th, or something? |

I've been voting since '72, and the only candidates I've ever voted for because I really liked them, were Ronald Reagan and Scott Walker. Every other election was a "lesser of two evils" choice. I figured one or the other was going to be there anyway, I might as well support the one I figured would do the least amount of harm. This time is no differant. I'm no big Romney fan.... but I'd probably vote for Joe Stalin over Obama... at least Stalin was truthful on what his intentions were. So I'll be voting for Romney, and if it's Tommy vs Tammy, it'll be Tommy who gets my vote. Sorry, but lesser of two evils has been a fact of American life for a long time. Only "voting from the rooftops" will ever change that, I'm afraid. |

You would vote for him even after the stunts he pulled against Walker in the Govenors election? I'm pretty sure it went both ways at the time. IIRC, Walker even had an ad with Pelosi and Neumann side-by-side in that election. I'm also not 100% convinced that Walker is as focused on cutting spending as he is about moving around the numbers to make the short-term look good. That being said, I had to leave WI in 2010 due to the job market, so I admit I wasn't paying as much attention to that election as I am to the current ones. If you've got something to convince me that Neumann isn't as committed as he seems to be, I'm willing to listen. |
| I sorta like Hove too, but his comercials are hurting him in my eyes. You can tell he's not very polished, which is good, when it comes to politicians, but it's not something you need out their in everyones face. Also his daughters are odd, in the comercial filmed in their kitchen which is bigger than my house. |

Nuemann declared himself the Tea Party Candidate at a rally he crashed in Racine. He forgot to ask anyone for that endorsement and my conversation with him at that even turned me off to him. He just has that politician slime oozing from him, and though he will tell you he's against entitlements, he sure feels entitled to another spot in politics. You'd figure after all these failed attempts, he'd get the point.
I'm most likely voting for Hovde in the primary. Mostly because I think that citizens turned politicians are motivated to actually accomplish what they say they are going to do. Neumann and Thompson are old-hat and have all the answers during the campaign. We'll see what they do if they actually get in. Heck, it Nuemann won the primary, I'd be shocked if he could win the seat. |
| Neither Nueman or Thompson will get my vote, Thomson is a rino and Nueman did things in his last election bid that will never get him my vote. I think Hovde may well be the one to vote for, new blood and all that like Johnson and so far he hasn't been a disappointment. |

Tommy's blue-blood RINO Rockefeller-wing spendthrift and for-it-before-he-was-against-Obamacare bona fides are well established. Neumann, his love for ethanol scams, and what he pulled in the 2010 Governor's primary is enough for me. Fitzgerald, a few qualms about his past actions in the WI legislature, but he's been stellar since 2010 few folks have kept their shit together like he did in a more contentious legislative environment anywhere in the U.S. than him in the past decade. Folks can whine about WI Shall-Issue CCW and constitutional CCW, but this is a grownup conversation we're having here. Hovde. Looks good, but a total shot in the dark as to what kind of a Republican, much less, a conservative, he'd be.
I agree any of them are better than Baldwin obviously, and whoever goes up against her will probably win, but my order of preference would be Fitzgerald, Hovde, Neumann, then Thompson. Fitzgerald's numbers appear to be in the toilet, so my hopes are for Hovde, and his ability to throw money at the problem, and cash in on the electorate's desire for "new blood" and "outsiders. And keep my fingers crossed he'll continue to "walk the walk" after a few years of Washington. |

Hasn't Hovde refused to respond on 2nd Amendment issues? IIRC, his campaign just says he's a 2nd Amendment supporter, but won't go into any specifics, such as is he a hunter, shooter, pro-gun organization member, whats his stance on concealed carry, etc. I'm guessing that since Hovde chose to live in D.C. for 20+ years instead of over the Virginia border, he has zero interest in firearms. |

Agreed. You can support the second amendment and still be anti gun. It is all the interpretation of the amendment.....unfortuneately. That being said, I really don't think it is high on his priority list. |

So you would vote for someone anti CCW? Your call. Yeah say hi when you talk to him ![]() You sure he's still "anti CCW" ?? His endorsement list (on his website) lists Ted Nugent and NRA President David Keene. What I remember most about him when he was governor was the welfare reforms. I'm good with that. As it stands right now, he'll get my vote too... but I also do like Hovde. None of the candidates stand out as being a strong 2nd Amendment zealot. Only Baldwin stands out as being an anti-gunner. |

I just heard from my wife, that an election-type TV commercial she saw last night claims Hovde contributed $500 to the re-election campaign of Jim "asshat" Doyle!!! WTF??? How can this be verified, or proven false... is there some website that lists Doyle's donors?
Just when I was starting to like the guy, I hear this. |

I find Newman to be slimy. Baldwin would be a good opponent, there is NO WAY she'll get any traction out of Dane County. She's a Madison favorite and nothing else. So the primary fight is more important as it's a choice between republicans. Thompson is a doof, but relatively harmless. Hovde looks interesting, but he's spending a lot trying to convince business owners to vote for him without being specific enough in my eyes. Most people aren't business owners, and the guys I work for, won't be passing tax cuts on to me. So I am not sure of the point of tax breaks on businesses. It's not like he can attract more to the state if he's in the Senate in DC. He is worth keeping an eye on in case he refines his message in a likable way. He may be Sniggit*. *Still No Information "Gun Guy" Is True

Besides, people change, I voted for Clinton. Not too proud of that now I don't care if he donated to 10 others also... giving so much as a single $ to Doyle is enough for me. IMO, they don't get any worse than Doyle. Doyle is the lowest of the low, as far as I'm concerned. I have a very low opinion of anyone who donated to, supported, or voted for Doyle... no matter the reason. It's the same opinion I have of anyone who voted for Obama, Pelosi, Schumer, etc.
Flame has posted that Neuman's a slimeball, & I trust his opinion... so no vote for Neuman. I guess, for my vote, it's between Tommy and Fitz now. I knew Tommy personally before he got eleced Gov. He was a nice guy, and I always liked him. But, that was 30+ years ago, and he wasn't a "politicion" then. Would I be voting for the Tommy I knew as a lawyer in Tomah/Mauston area in the 70s, or a Tommy who's been "corrupted" by 30 years of politics? The biggest thing Hovde had going for him, IMO, was he wasn't a politicion. Now I think he's just another liberal asshole masquerading as a conservative. Or worse... someone who donated to both sides, looking for something in return from whomever won ("hedging his bets" is what you called it). |

Well here is my general take on this race and the candidates at this point:
I am in no way shape or form endorsing a candidate one way or another. It is simply how I see things. Hovde: His main advantage is that he has virtually unlimited funds to spend, which in this race happens to be absolutely necessary as two of his opponents have exceptionally name ID already. Everyone has to understand that name ID in this the game is pretty important, and he has spent an incredible amount of money trying to up his name ID and frame himself in a light that his staff believes to be favorable in this climate. As part of this effort to up name ID, he has also been able to frame himself to you, the voters, as a staunch conservatives. He has spent millions of dollars doing this, and has done so pretty much unopposed for the last 5 months or so. As a new candidate, you have an opportunity to present yourself in whatever manner you want. You have no real track record, so you can effectively “become” anything you want, and force your opposition to try and “prove” you wrong. Now there is nothing wrong with this, and I am not saying that Hovde isn’t as “conservative” as he is claiming, because he very well may be. There are a number of things about Hovde (rightly or wrongly) that are ripe to be used against him by his opposition, including the following: -His donation to Doyle -High speed rail -his benefit/support from TARP -his support of Stem cell research -his early support of mortgage backed securities and how they contributed to his financial success -the fact that he is a hedge fund manager -the fact that he has lived in Washington for most if his life Now these may or may not have merit or validity, but quite frankly it doesn’t really matter; his opposition is going to use them regardless. The downside of being a new candidate is that your opposition can more easily frame you the way they want to. As easy as it is to frame yourself as a good guy, with no record, you also have a harder time disproving the boogie man stories brought up by your opposition. Here is where it gets interesting. There are essentially two factions in the race; the old guard republicans/ moderate republicans that are supporting Thompson, and the more conservative/tea party side of the house. There are a lot of us that see Thompson as being capped at around 35-45% in this race. (I personally put it at 40% max of likely primary voters) That leaves 60% or so to be divided up amongst 3 other candidates. Believe me, there was no bigger Hovde fan in the state of WI than Tommy Thompson the moment Hovde jumped into this race. Thompson likes the fact the conservative voters are divided, as it creates the best opportunity for him to attain victory in the primary. After getting beat down at the Republican state convention, Thompson knows that conservatives are simply not going to be behind him this year, so the next best thing to voter support is voter division and uncertainty. Here is where his campaign has made a mistake; he got nervous about Hovde’s climb in the polls and has allowed himself to get in a bit of a back and forth with Hovde. Neumann inevitably was going to have to be the one to go after Hovde, so he should have stayed on the high road, and stuck with his “I can beat Tammy” message. On Neumann; he was put in a bad spot since the day Hovde entered the race. He ran very hard against the Governor, only to see the Governor launched to fame in a meteoric, epic manner. Now he is in a situation where he has no other option than to bring up the issues that will inevitably be brought up about Hovde, but by doing so, he will remind everyone about his campaign with the Governor, which many primary voters can’t seem to let go of. This is why the Club for Growth is taking the offensive in Neumann’s defense; in the hope that he can avoid some of the collateral damage associated with what will be viewed as negative campaigning. (expect to see more of Neumann’s other key supporters in the next month, including Senators DeMint, Paul, Rubio, and Lee, as they all attempt to consolidate the conservative vote behind Neumann) Neumann will try and stay out of it himself, but make no mistake, Hovde or Neumann will have to be completely crushed (below 10-15%) for either to have a chance at victory. Neumann needs pretty much every Hovde supporter to jump ship, and Hovde needs the opposite. Because Neumann was always destined to battle with Hovde, Thompson should have sat out the attack effort on Hovde and let Neumann do the work for him. Instead he did get involved, which I think inevitably opens the door for attacks on him from both Hovde and Neumann. This isn’t great for Thompson, as I believe he has nowhere to go but down from the 40% I believe him to be capped out at. What is very scary to me in all of this are Baldwin’s attacks on Hovde. In theory, Baldwin’s campaign should be hoping to face Hovde in the general, because of all the issues I mentioned earlier. In a bad economy, in Wisconsin, conventional knowledge is that the Dems should be praying to face Hovde. Remember, they could care less about you and me; they care about the people in the middle. They will run Evil hedge fund banker commercials nonstop for 3 months, and I believe this tact would ultimately be effective in a state where the margin of victory will likely only be about 50,000 votes one way or another.(Not saying it’s right, just saying that it is what will happen) So why attack Hovde? I believe it is either a mistake, or they internally are actually hoping to face Thompson. Now I am not going to go into much about Thompson, but there are certainly many reasons why Baldwin would want to face him. One could simply be that they are sick and tired of getting beat down by conservative tea party candidates here in the State, so they are hoping for a moderate this go round. So where does it all sit? What must the candidates do now? Thompson: Must try and stay out of the fray, hold his 40%, and torpedo the conservative frontrunner whoever that may be. Thompson is hoping for a 40/25/25/10 race. Hovde: Figure out how to counter all the attacks that come up and prevent himself from being redefined by his opposition, and bring Thompson down 5 points. Hovde is hoping for a 40/35/15/10 race. Neumann: Discredit Hovde, bring Thompson down 5 points to 35%, highlight his conservative economic record as a Congressman, and highlight his conservative endorsements. Neumann is hoping for a 40/35/15/10 race. No offense to Fitzgerald, but he raised under $50,000 last reporting period; around half of what some State Senate candidates were able to raise. I believe his reasoning for getting into this was two- fold: gain statewide name ID for a future run, while at the same time hoping that the stars would align and he could pull a “Herman Cain” and rise to the fore front at exactly the right time. I believe he will draw somewhere around 10%, and very likely could be the primary spoiler that helps Tommy Thompson win. In short, conservatives will have to pick one, or Tommy Thompson will be the default winner in the Wisconsin primary. |

No way I want to reward Neumann for the dirty pool he played in the governor's race. And it's hearsay, but there's a few people who've worked for him that departed under less than friendly terms that indicates there's a good chance Neumann runs more than just his political ads that way. Furthermore, he's profited many times more off of fed.gov "green" energy money, and more directly, in his business ventures than Hovde did by taking over TARP banks in his hedge fund.
I'll take at face-value the $500 donation to Doyle was just a pro-forma expenditure on the behalf of his Madison real-estate holdings co. Not because they liked Doyle, but just because he was the seated governor. And it really wasn't "him", just his directors and managers under him. He did give $7500 to Walker by comparison in 2010. High speed rail? That's a huge stretch. He's on record way before running that WI high speed rail was "the dumbest idea ever". It was a one-liner throwaway comment about infrastructure upgrades in the Northeast, where people actually do take trains to work etc. I'd much rather see Fitzgerald win this as well, but I have to be realistic. I'd rather take a chance on Hovde, than see Neumann be finally rewarded for all his slander and lies, or Thompson get in with his "big government conservative" mindset. Although when the rubber meets the road, I'd pull the lever for any of them to oppose Baldwin. |

Tommy is the creator of BadgerCare. Why the fuck would anyone want to vote for a welfare dickhead? Well, in legislative bodies, the "lesser of two evils" equation still actually holds some water. He'd still be a GOP seat, and could turn the Senate over to the Republicans, and then they get all the power, Senate Majority Leader, all the committeemen appointments, control the schedule, make the Senate session rules, etc. etc. etc. And while he probably wouldn't be a good hard-charger for serious limited-government reforms and whatnot, he'd still probably be a reliable vote for whatever the rest of the GOP in the House & Senate was trying to do. |

You mean he could help pass Romneycare? My goodness, we need to push for better candidates and stop voting for the lesser of two evils. |

So what you're telling us is you wouldn't vote against Tammy Baldwin in the general election if it's not the GOP candidate you like? |

I don't ever vote against someone, that's stupid and bad decision making. I vote for whom I think should be in office based on historical votes, character, and what they stand for. I will vote for the lesser of two evils, IF and ONLY IF I feel the lesser of two evils will help in a positive way. |

Fitzgerald helped push thru Walkers reforms and helped give Wisconsin concealed Carry. Why not send him to Washington. He'll get my vote. I was sold on Hovde, but he's such a gamble, in my opinion. He has all the talking points down, but who knows what he really believes. A lot of people tell me voting for Fitzgerald it throwing out my vote, but he is the one candidate who I know has the balls to get things done. |

It's good to bring this thread back up again, as the primary is in two weeks.
Hovde isn't even on my list anymore. He seems to be "correct" on his 2nd Amendment stance, but nobody has actually seen him do any hunting or shooting, or seen him with a firearm of any kind. Thompson is wishy washy on the 2nd Amendment, and may be too old to get any seniority for committees. Neumann is a possibility, but he lacks the charm to attract the lowest common denominator voters, I'd vote for him though simply because of his stance on the isues. Fitzgerald could also be OK, but I believe he had some infleunce in getting S93 changed from Constitutional Carry to license carry. |
The more I learn about Hovde, the less I like him. Yeah, he looks good on TV... personable, intelligent, etc. So is Obama.
To me, Hovde is pulling a "Hillary". Hillary Clinton moved to New York, just so she could win a Senate seat there. She lived most of her adult life in Arkansas, originally from Chicago (I believe). Hovde has lived in Washington DC for the past 20 years. He's never even registered to vote in WI. He may be from WI originally, but he moved back here just to run for office. 2nd amendment issues are very important to me. Can I trust a guy to vote for my gun rights who's lived the last 20 years somewhere where he can't even own a gun? I think not.

Furthermore, he's profited many times more off of fed.gov "green" energy money, and more directly, in his business ventures than Hovde did by taking over TARP banks in his hedge fund.
