I was going over some of my guns, esp. the ones I don't use much. In fact, this M48 mauser, I fired less than a box of shells through it when I got it. I bought the ammo surplus, and it was supposed to be non-corrosive. This was 2 years ago or so.

It wasn't non-corrosive. Dammit! I scrubbed and scrubbed, and it still looks like shit.

I had an SKS many moons ago that did the same. Never did clean up right. Bought three at the time for $60 each. Ended up selling them all for $600 (with 1200 rds of ammo).

Wish I would have kept those. No clue how to clean it out well.

On a side note, are you what your name suggests? RC Plane pilot?

yes. Been out of it for a couple of years, but still have my stuff, and looking to start again later this summer.

Try soaking with hoppes, kriol, or some solvent to try to get it to release the rust.

A SS brush back and forth until the bristles fall off might help.

I had an old mosin with a bore so bad that if you shot a 180gr bullet out of it by the time it left the muzzle it weighed 175gr....

I wrapped a old bore brush with a little 0000 steel wool and worked it back and forth a bunch, never shined up but did shoot better after that.

No surplus ammo from the eastern block is non-corrosive. Shoot some and clean right after for best results - I have cleaned up some nasty ones this way.

I once ruined a barrel on an M1 Garand shooting Korean "non-corrosive" ammo.

The barrel was beyond saving and I sold it to a guy who re-barreled it to .308.

Scrubbed and scrubbed is a good thing... now shoot it...a bunch, and scrub some more. You may not be so bad off. I have owned several sewer pipe Mausers that shot beyond my ability.

Electrolysis.

There are a number of ways to do it and I would do a bit more research but here's the general idea.

Funny.  I saw this earlier and thought "what's an arch-a-vator"... then it hit me.  Slow I am.....

I just may try that electrolysis method...

I got into it a couple of years ago. Have a ton of stuff. Might pick it back up this year also. Let me know. I am a rookie though..

2 Copper bore brushes, Sweet's 7.62 or Hoppe's and a drill on low setting.

I have cleaned many a corrosive laidened barrel with a slow spinning borebrush on a rod.

It must be done on the user end to ensure barrel groove and rotation of the rod match (so it will not come apart).

It usually takes a couple of hours (or yes, days) to include the waiting in between soakings (plug the barrel, fill the barrel and ensure no air gaps are in the barrel = pour in the chamber down a string or thin nail).

I got into it in about 87-88-89 (mind is goin' ). I flew a LOT back then, being single. Went into pattern, placed in top 3 at the 3 major contests in this area in my 2nd year, novice class. Lost interest in pattern after that. Just flew around for years. Started slowing down after having kids. Last year, I sold my Ace Micropro radio and get a 2.4ghz system. Haven't flown yet. Electrics really are taking over the hobby. I maintained my membership in the AMA and local club even when I wasn't flying.

Got into it maybe three years ago. Here are a few pics. I also have another trainer (built), another cub (bigger and built), and another midwing to build yet. Went to 2.4 ghz. Glad I did too.

And the flying crazy plane. This thing is NUTS to fly.

Is that the MARCS club field I see? Sure looks like it!

I used to have a twist too. Had a Saito .65 in it. Sold it when I got tired of it.

Yes it is the field by the heap of trash. Ever swim in that creek at the far side of the field? I did, to retrieve a lost plane of mine.

Dozen people there too. Didn't know there were two foot bridges. I never stunk so bad in my life.

Great place to fly from though!

ARe you a member there? I'm surprised nobody else from the club helped you, informing you of the bridges and that there are poles you could use to pull your plane closer. :(

I lost a plane in that creek for 2 months when I was a beginner. Nobody could see the damn thing until some members flew over in a ultralite and spotted it.

That's the club I belong to also.

Yeah, nobody said a word. Was a member for two years, didn't fly last year at all. Started a new business, never have time. But I might get back into it this summer, if time frees up.

Did you fly out there any time in the last few years? I should think about re-joining.

I tried to start flying again last year, guess my fuel is too old, cause it deadsticked on my first pass, I landed, and broke the prop. Didn't have a spare, so went home. But haven't really tried again since then.

Like I said, I keep up my membership, but haven't flow other than above for a few  years.

One prop? Ha ha ha! I figure that in my costs every time I go in the air. If I don't break at least one prop, it means I never left the ground. Still haven't figured out this whole angle of attack thing on landing yet.

I still have my prop from my first plane. Flew that trainer for years, including fun flies. Yes, I broke a few before this one, but once I had that sucker mastered, never broke a prop on that plane again.

Would you believe the reason I'm not working too hard on this hobby right now is because of lack of table space?? I don't have any place to put a plane on to work on it.

Would I believe it? I'm in exactly the VERY same situation. I have a nice 4X8' table in the basement along with two other 2X8 tables/benches, and they're covered in crap. Yeah, I get it. I still have a plane in a box to build. No place to build it.

Guess I'm going to have to work on that sooner or later. It is a lot of fun building them, working on them. ALmost more fun than flying them.

I get you there. I have a big stash of kits, 4 or 5 planes in various stages of build, and a whole bunch of plans, and see a few more plans I'd like to get.

It's like ARFcom and ammo...you never have enough.

What we need is for you to have a plane or two that need to be destroyed –– i.e. really cool reactive targets for Roasted Nuts.

Ever watch Dillon's "Machine Gun Magic"? They tired shooting down a all foam RC plane. Took them quite awhile and IIRC, it was usually only if they hit the engine, servo, or the receiver. The foam can take quite a bit of abuse it would seem. I bet there are youtube videos of people trying this too.

Why...........Why would you ever assume the off all the calibers on the planet...................that surplus 8mm would be non-corrosive?  That being said take her out and shoot the hell out of her.  Heat up the barrel and at the range punch the bore with some kroil and when you get home use more kroil coupled with JB Bore paste and some good copper remover.  Oh yeah.........use some non-corrisive ammo when you take her to the range.

The aircraft thing caught on at the Big Sandy / now MG Shooters shoots in Arizona.

2003, my first-ever Big Sandy shoot.  Night aircraft shoot begins at  3:32.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pR1HdlNFD8A

2005- when ammo was cheap and life was good!  Daytime aircraft shoot starts at 0:48:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z05UF_pTYAE

Now they make the aircraft "reactive."  You'll never be able to reuse the plane, but it's a lot more fun.

Here's a 2009 video that has a really good explanation of and introduction to the shoot - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8tDaze3vhhE.  The explanation/intro starts around 3:00, you'll get a chuckle at 4:21,  and some friends bring out their gun at 5:08.  (And now you know who is to blame for getting me into bigger stuff.)

I really miss those shoots.

Mike
