So I made the mistake of purchasing a handgun on Saturday from a big box sporting goods store. Filled out all of the forms with my actual, current address. Handed over my driver's license and told the clerk that my address is up to date with the DMV, but the address printed on the DL is old. Wisconsin DMV doesn't issue new DLs for change of address, nor do they give out the change of address stickers that they used to have.
Clerk says "go online to the DMV website, and change your address. Print out the change of address acknowledgement form and bring it with when you pick it up." I'm like , and told him again that my address is already updated with the DMV. I then offered my fishing license (correct address), and even my auto registration (correct address, and from the DMV). Clerk says no, the ATF requires you to print the DMV change of address form. Again, I'm thinking .
I'm hoping same kid isn't at the counter when I pick up. Can somebody point me to the ATF and State DOJ regs for what is required for address verification? |

When I moved 3 years ago I had no problem getting a new DL. It was $34 but I'm good until 2018 with it. How are you going to vote if your DL doesn't match your address? I believe all you need is a valid ID. If the address doesn't match you need a utility bill or mortgage/ rental contract with your name and you are good to vote. |

Since when? At least 5 years. At first they started giving out the blue stickers that you put on the DL. Then they shifted to the notification only system. I had the same issue yesterday. Went to fill out the paperwork on my CZ75 and didn't know my DL had to match my current residence. Went to the DMV yesterday and had a new license printed right there on the spot with my new address. Cost $14. I suggest you find the nearest DMV that does renewals and stop in. I went to the renewal center on Odana in Madison. Funny thing is, my FFL told me that the ATF requires the DL match the residence info on the form 4473. I bought two long guns in the past 2 months (without knowing that regulation) and the addresses didn't match. I guess they just didn't notice.

| Surprised I havent had an issue yet either since they my DL has me living at a different address, I'm leary of switching it with the DMV, it might raise some flags as to why none of my vehicles are registerd to my residence then, nothing I own will pass emissons testing. It'd be nice to figure out the voting thing one way or another for sure though. |

Unless something else has changed policy at Gander Mtn was always if the DL address didn't match they'd make a copy of a hunting/fishing license as long as it had your current address. That was considered proof that your current address was registered with the state.
Often when the DMV stopped the blue sticker thing (used to keep a handfull around for customers) we would end up having a customer go up to the cust. service desk to buy their fishing/hunting license...or even just a trout stamp or something. Sounds like you had a clueless clerk, unfortunately that happens. There's always more than one guy working the counter so sometimes you have to ask for a second opinion. |

The onalaska store had a policy that if your DL didn't match you current address you had to go across the street to the DMV and get your DL fixed, or get the sticker. Hunting or fishing licences didn't matter because it had to match your DL too. This was that way it was up until I left the company in 2008. Things may have changed since then, but I can't imagine it was for the better. |

I have bought more than a few firearms with a DL that had my old address. The DMV was up to date on my current address. Clerks have tried to hassle me because my DL did not match the 4473 address. That is about the time I explain "it's ok, I've done this before", they usually just say yeah whatever and reluctantly proceed. The look on their face when I am approved tells me I do not even need to say 'I told you so.' |

Go to the DMV eddie. As ohers have alos pointed out, you can get a new DL for a change of address, mine was done in 2010. Also a must if you want a CCL. |

I f'd up when I went to Cabelas before Christmas... my DL says Milwaukee, my address was actually West Allis. I put WA on the 4473... bam... wouldn't sell me the gun because I had no proof my address was in WA and not MW. I was pretty pissed. It was during Christmas rush and I had already waited 2 hours at the gun counter... grrr... had to come back a week later... |

Also a must if you want a CCL. No, the DMV database is the official address, not the address printed on the DL. There is no requirement to pay for a replacement license. |

It's on the FFL to verify the correct address. When your background check is called in, the address you list is not given to the operator. On a 4473 there's place for alternate identification, if you read the instructions it explains that you can use a government issued permit or license to verify address in the event the address on your photo ID does not match the address listed on the form. It doesn't surprise me that some of you have gotten away with it, there's no checks and balances in place to catch it. Shortly after I got my FFL I missed it a few times.
To change your address go here: http://www.dot.state.wi.us/drivers/drivers/address-change.htm To order a replacement DL with updated address go here (cost: $14): http://www.dot.state.wi.us/drivers/drivers/duplicate-license.htm |
