Since the Wisconsin CCW bill  has passed, now is the time to practice with the defensive handguns you will one day carry concealed.

I believe in both training AND combat pistol competition, like IDPA or USPSA, in order to stay prepared for defensive situations.

There are many benefits to competition, but, at a minimum, you learn to draw from the holster you will carry, you gain trigger time with the gun you carry (or one just like it) & you are presented with novel scenarios that might just make you think about how best to defend your life/ family if the need ever arrises.

BTW - my "ipsc race" gun is the exact gun I often carry concealed: a bone-stock S&W 9mm.  I might "modify" it with night sights soon - but those are the only mods I plan.  I do quite well in competition with it.

Great idea.  I've been interested in trying out IDPA for some time.

I prefer USPSA/IPSC to IDPA.  I think USPSA is more fun and laid-back.  Both are a good opportunity to react, shoot and have fun.

But, there have not been any nearby matches posted.  I'm hoping to attend an IDPA shoot in Hartland.  Or, if I can swing it, attend the USPSA WI Championship in Lodi.

I tried to get into the USPSA steel shoot and emailed the organizer there in Oconomowoc. Never heard a peep from them. No response from voicemails or anything. Is that some sort of secret squirrel club?

And screw IDPA. Have some friends in the PNW who got screwed recently by some rule changes (long story short, the owners decided to make their own rules) and now have to find a new range to shoot at. USPSA > *

I,too, emailed the Oconomowoc club about their schedule and never heard back.  I know Hartland had some challenges going on but they still list upcoming events.

Schultz Rod & Gun club in Muskego has NISA USPSA (Northen Illinois Shooting Association) and local WI USPSA matches just about every month. Usually most months there's one of each. Just show up at 9:00-9:30 and sign in. First-timers always welcome.  Schultz's range is pretty crude as compared to some club's, but the genius behind the design is when the rifle range is closed, the 100yd, 75yd, and 50 yd berms become action bays with 180 degrees of shooting. Then there is a fourth action bay outside the main range, and two more mini-bays made from shipping containers.

The club is on the north shore of the large shallow & marshy Big Muskego lake, so bring bug spray...

We also have bowling pin shoots on a regular basis, generally once a month. Granted, there's no move & shoot or barricades like there is in USPSA, but when you're not actually shooting the timed five-pin tables, we have the other side set up with "terrorist alley" of 20 random bowling pins and "hostage" pins set up on the berm and there's no charge for that.

Still WAY better than just punching static paper targets.

Muskego is a hassle to get to from where I am but I'll have to give it a try.

For whatever reason, all these guys drive all the way up from Northern Illinois to shoot at our club...

I shoot USPSA, and IDPA, and as far as I know, Ripon, and Racine are the only two clubs still shooting IDPA.

For USPSA, Ripon, and Schultz's both host two matches a month. Lodi, just North of Madison, just started shooting USPSA last year, and are hosting the Wisconsin sectionals this year. For those that live on the West side of the state, Holmen, just North of LaCrosse puts on some good matches. I really don't know what's going on at Oconomowoc Sportsman's Club. They cancelled last Sunday's match, and there's nothing on their calendar.

A good source of match information can be found here:  http://wisconsinshooters.com/joomla/

Then you wont like production class in USPSA either.

But, you can shoot limited and run full mags. But if you go that route, I'd get some mag extensions.
