Find somebody who already loads and learn as much as you can from them. Also read, read, and read some more. I started out with the ABC's of Reloading, which is always very highly recommended. The Lee Anniversary set has all the tools you need to start, aside from dies for each caliber and a good micrometer.

Flamethrower is the master of this topic and will surely add more. I've only been loading for about two years now and learned a ton here on the loading forum as well.

Have fun!

ETA: Don't fool yourself into thinking that reloading is really that much cheaper! You just spend more money in a different way as it becomes a whole new hobby parallel to the shooting.

If you are anywhere near me I would be willing to open my reloading room to you and teach you to reload.

Dillon 550B and dont ever look back. Especially if your going to reload for handgun, as it is so much quicker than most other presses.

A 650 would be a better choice if the op plans on loading rifle calibers and intends on using the case feeder for it.

I would agree with Todd. My buddy bought the 550 and he prefers to use my 650.

And I love it!!! (bought it from Todd too, was going to get the 550).

He has stated that he has more time than money, so that most likely means a Lee starter kit. Nothing wrong with a single stage, especially when learning how to reload.
Clay54961, where are you from?

Started with a Lee Challenger press over 25 years ago. Back then I thought it was all the shit(at least all I could afford at the time in HS) Over the years tried different things(Lee turret, etc)trying to make things work at a somewhat productive pace. Was not until just last year where I made the plunge for a 550, 2 additional tool heads, bench, etc. Could not be happier with the results. It makes the process fun, and quick. The only thing about the whole set up that bums me out is how fast a pound of powder gets gobbled up once you get into a groove.

Here's a link to the Lee 50th Anniversary Kit. This is what I got to start reloading. It's much slower than the Dillon Progressives they've discussed, and some people would tell you that Lee isn't as good as RCBS, but it's kind of a Ford vs. Chevy argument to me. Lee is a Wisconsin company, located in Hartford, so I support them any chance I get.

Read the ABC's of Reloading, find a good mentor, get a kit like the Lee 50th Anniversary, and you'll be on your way.

ETA: You're damn right I'm getting a Dillon 650 when I can afford it. In the mean time, the hand press is a good way to start for anyone new to loading.

Flamethrower,

Didn't you host a reloading clinic some time back?

My search is weak today. I think you and/or the OP should think about putting on another basic clinic  (i'd like to attend, missed the first one...), I could host a followup/advanced clinic where folks could dial in a load, step outside and test it.

I like this idea a LOT Todd. You might even want to put it on in oh say...Madison. Maybe at my house. I have the 650XL waiting to pound out some ammo. And plenty of room for a class. A more basic setup than your monster 1050's.

You would run it, I would host it. If you like the idea, let me know.

I like the idea. I know I am due to put another class on. I am also trying to get all my ducks in a row for an advanced class.
I have 6 people waiting to take the basic class already. How many can you host?

I aalo want to try and condense the basic class a little if I can.

I would tell you that I started and still use a Lee turret press, but I would be afraid that Todd & Mike would make fun of my "little thingy"

I would not.

I own and still use everyone of my presses. From small to large.

I don't know how many I could host, you've been in my house. The kitchen/living room is about 600 sq ft. Maybe 10-12 people? In the basement/workshop/loading area is probably the same.

I have the 650 set up and a couple of MEC shotgun loaders. Not setup but can talk about them. Have the case cleaner all set up and the plotter... (decals).

Maybe we're due to get together and put something together on this some night/weekend?
