This range, which has been in the same location for more than 40 years on county forest land, is in serious danger of being shut down. A nearby private landowner (who happens to be a real estate broker) is trying to subdivide her 30+ acres of land, and has issues about "noise" and "safety". Her land is approx 3/4 mile behind the shotgun range, and she's claiming a .30 cal rifle bullet found in her siding, came from the range. The rifle & pistol ranges are facing about 110 degrees the other way, and the intervening 3/4 mile is county forest, and open to public deer hunting. She has hired a local attorney, and is threatening to sue the county into closing the range permanently. This matter will be discussed (again... she's been at it for several years now, and will not go away) at the next Vilas county "forestry, parks and recreation" board meeting, on Wed, June 4th, begins at 9am. Location is the Lincoln Town Hall, on Sundstein Rd, 1/4 mile so. of hwy 70W, in Eagle River. It was on the agenda at the May 7th meeting, and the whole board, and those of us concerned shooters who attended, moved the meeting TO the range itself, for a first hand look. |
I'm pretty sure there are laws in the state that can help prevent this from happening. If the range was there first, the new neighbors don't have a legal leg to stand on. You might want to check it out, but that's what a member of the Natural Resource Board told me. |
Eventually, yes... but that's at least 10 years down the road. The State DOT doesn't own the pit - the county does - but they have about 10 years left on a long term lease with the county. Current zoning regs require any new outdoor rifle or pistol range to be a minimum of 1.5 miles from any occupiable private dwelling. That means a 3 mile diameter circle. The only such location on county land in the Eagle River/Conover area is the gravel pit. The current range would not conform to the present zoning regs, but is "grandfathered". That's why it's so important for it to stay where it is.
You're right, there is a shooting range protection law. Amazingly, the members of the county board were not even aware of it's existance... until I gave them a copy of it that I printed out from the official WI web-site, and gave to them at the last meeting. The county's lawyer is checking it out. The law pertains to "private" ranges, not necessarily to a county owned one... so we'll see what happens. |
Tatoo I'd be interested in that place...My father lives over on Cook St., right next to the Sherriff's office. As a matter of fact, im coming up this weekend and i'll need a place to shoot. The place i usually go to is Dells Rifle Club P.O. Box 262 Wi Dells, WI 53965 THey've got a nice 50M, 100M, 200M rifle range, and a separate 25M pistol range. If anyone's interested, i cna get you more info. THe business card had the p.o. address on it. I punched it into my GPS, so i have exact co-ordinates. There is a good range right across the river from me (La Crosse) in La Crescent. Gopher state rifle range. A lot of Wisconsin guys go there, as well as Minnesota. You don't need to be a Minnesota resident, and the yearly fees are somewhere around 20-30$ It's mostly empty 75% of the year, and shotgun competition on sundays. 200 yard rifle range, and 25 yard pistol range. Anyone in La Crosse you can check this out to alternatives to driving 45 minutes to other ranges. |
| Im new to this forum but here is a range up in Holmen, WI, Holmen Rod&GunClub Inc. $20 a yr. Its outdoor .They have 200yrd rifle range. I have shot my AK there with no problem. BTW Im in Kenosha.My inlaws live in Lacrosse so I go to Holmen when Im there to shoot. |
You need to get a member to sponser you, which shouldnt be hard. I think the initial fee is now 150 dollars and 45 dollars every year after that. You also have to work a minimum of 100 hours over the course of the first 3 years, and you cant put it off until the last year. But its probally one of the best range facilities in the state, and you get your own key. I would be happy to sponser you but, i wont do so without meeting you first. Cheers, rugger |
