One of the little job shops I used to work for is quoting me at $3.50 a pound. A 30"X18"X3/8" plate would run me $200.

I'm not going pay that much for this little piece of steel.

I'm looking for the said dimensions in AR500 or AR400. Preferably AR500.

Any sources?

Buy from a reputable target manufacturer, and yes, good steel that won't get you hurt costs big money.

Besides, how are you palnning on hanging those plates at the range?  There's actually a right way and a wrong way to do it, and you might want to talk to the safety comittee to make sure what you want to do will be approved.

Got plenty of 4140, T6 Alum, and even some bullet resistant Plexiglas material for making a homemade trauma plate;) Just for fun, and not a duty rig of course!

Not hanging them. Wanted to make a stand.

Essentially I would be building an exact copy of the one in the trailer.

Building stuff out of steel is what I do for a living.

I am familiar with the properties of different grades of steel.

AR500 is the only real choice for shooting at 25 yards and beyond.

AR400 would be reserved for longer ranges and would have to be replaced sooner. (I don't think I would trust it too long for 5.56)

T1 ,(A514), would most likely crack.

A36 would be too rubbery and very dangerous.

ETA: I want to be perfectly clear to club members here.

I do NOT have the intention of building an unsafe target and stand.

I do NOT want to put anyone at risk here.

Said target and stand will be approved by the committee.

I'm not looking to cheap out on quality materials. I'm just looking for the best price.

I don't know if anyone listens to "Gunfighter Cast".

Anyhoo –– he was looking to test out various steel targets.  Only one guy got back to him and was a straight shooter.

Sent out samples which were "good to go" for the money.

Don't have first hand experience but it looks good...supporting American small business is good too.

Then you should realize perfectly that the $250 or so you'd pay for an AR500, IDPA-sized target from one of the reputable target makers is an excellent deal.

Relax, brother, I wasn't making accusations, just imparting the information.  The best price you're going to find on AR500 for targets will come from a reputable target maker (the Safety Comittee has a list if you want it).  You could but from Speedy Metals, MWMH, or a host of others locally and make your own target and stand, but by the time you're done, you'll have spent damn near what MGM, LE targets, or Action will cost.

I'm finding this out.

Disappoints me though cuz I'm a tinkerer by nature.

No problems here.

I just didn't want any club members to get antsy.

I'm pretty new there and I've already seen some dumb stuff there.
