| Heard that there was a range in Boulder Junction that was 300 yards long. Anyone know where in or around boulder it is? |
|
It's on Nebish Lk Rd, off of Vilas Cty Hwy M, several miles south of the town of Boulder Junction. Nebish Lk Rd is on the east side of M, across M from Trout Lake, north of hwy "N", and south of where hwy "K" leaves "M" and goes east ("M" & "K" share the road for a few miles south of BJ). There's one of those white signs w/ black lettering (like you see all over the north, pointing to businesses, etc) on M & Nebish that says "Boulder Junction shooting range". It's not very far in off of M.
If you go to "Google Maps" and search for Boulder Junction WI, click on "satelite", then scroll south and zoom in, you can see an aerial view. You can see the trap range on the north side of the range, and the rifle range is on the south side of the range. |

I take it this is a public range? I go camping near there for a week every year, maybe I'll check it out in June when I'm up there. Yes, it's public, because it's on state land. I've never used it myself, as it's about 35 miles away, and there's 4 other "free" public ranges that are closer to me (located near Conover, Phelps, Land O Lakes, and Arbor Vitae). I do most of my shooting at "private" ranges, on land belonging to friends. One of those is only a few miles from home, at a good friend's deer camp, and it has a roof over the shooting benches so they're always snow free, and dry when it's raining. We've got 25, 50, and 100yd backstops built, and a 200yd backstop across a swampy area (damn hard to get to, to hang targets, so we've just got some steel "gong" plates on it). It's on a 40 that's 2 miles back in the woods, on a deeded access road off of a Nicolet Forest road, it's gated, and less than a dozen guys have keys for the gate. The guy that owns the land has a snowplow, and he keeps it drivable all winter. |

Thanks for the info, I found their website http://boulderjunctionshootingrange.com/ but it wasn't clear on the range, mostly talked about their trap stuff. I'm definitely planning to stop there, after a week of drinking and swimming we start to get bored at camp. This should be better then a nature walk..... Sounds like you got a cool setup. I couldn't imagine how nice it would be to just go shooting in my back yard or a friends. We have talked about buying some land near Minnaqua some day, the reality is we wouldn't be able to use it much but it sure is beautiful up there. |

Any info on the Land O Lakes range? South side of cty hwy "B", several miles west of the town of Land O Lakes, by the local garbage transfer station. (there's no sign out on B). I haven't been there in years, so my directions aren't too precise. Phelps range is on "Shooting Range Rd", left off of state hwy 17, about 5-6 miles north of Phelps (just before the Smokey Lake Pub & right across from the Long Lake boat landing). Shot there last summer. (Land O Lakes & Phelps ranges are kinda small, and don't get much use. Don't expect much, other than it's a place to shoot without getting hassled). Conover range is east side of US Hwy 45, about 5 miles north of Eagle River, or 5 miles south of Conover. It's marked by a white on brown sign out on the hwy (Conover range is closed when snowmobile trails open, and re-opens after spring thaw... usually mid to late April). This is where I go to shoot clays. You need your own thrower (I've got a 12vdc powered Do-All White Wing "automatic" target thrower Arbor Vitae range is on east side of US Hwy 51, a few miles north of the traffic light where state hwy 70 leaves 51 and goes east toward St. Germain. Nice range with shooting benches. All of these are on public land of some kind, and are free to the public. Each range has it's own set of posted rules and hours of operation. For example, at Conover, hours are 7am to sunset or 8pm, whichever comes first. All targets must be on, or immediately in front of, the backstops. No targets allowed on earthen berms behind backstops, and no shooting at anything made of glass. No full auto fire is allowed. (doesn't mean rapid semi-auto fire is banned... just no NFA "machine guns", thanks to one asshole who totally destroyed a backstop). |
