Can I mod a gun barrel in terms of length on my own as long as it is still in legal length (not SBR)?

Make certain that you measure the desired barrel length with a dowel rod or other suitable rod down the bore contacting a closed bolt face on the long-gun.

This is how the ATF measures this for NFA purposes, you can't just take a ruler on the outside of the long gun and measure from some arbitrary part of the gun where you think the receiver ends and the barrel begins.

You also need to stay within the NFA overall length requirement of 26". Some rifles and shotguns with very short receivers, such as a double-barreled break-action shotgun could wind up being under 26" in OAL even if you were very careful to cut the barrel with the dowel measurement to 16" for rifles or 18" for shotguns.

I was going to do it with a single shot shotgun. I was just planning on doing it from where the firing pin engages and make it 18.25 inches. But thanks for reminding me about the 26 OAL.
