Ya got some brass ones for carrying on State Street. Good show. You want some supporters at the court date?
In case anyone hasn't seen on your news Travis, whom i don't even know if he posts here, carried open on State Street a couple of days ago. Arrested and fine could be about $400.
Let's see if the AG puts his money where his mouth is.

This strengthens anyone's defense for CCW.

Man arrested, accused of openly carrying gun on State Street

The Capital Times  —  8/11/2009 10:01 am

A man carrying a firearm in a holster on his hip was cited for disorderly conduct Saturday while walking downtown, Madison police reported.

Travis F. Yates, 28, of Madison, was cited by Madison police under a city ordinance (not state law) because, according to police spokesman Joel DeSpain, Yates was told his actions "disturbed other citizens."

A concerned citizen contacted police about 5:19 p.m. Saturday after reportedly seeing Yates walking toward State Street from Carroll Street, with a holstered gun on his hip. He was stopped by police.

"He explained he was making a political statement by walking around with a loaded gun, as he believes law-abiding citizens should be able to openly carry firearms," DeSpain said.

Wisconsin law does allow for the open carrying of firearms, except inside a vehicle and in certain areas such as schools, etc.

Yates was taken home by an officer so he could "put the gun away," DeSpain said.

This illustrates the implications of the AG Memo being non binding.  Anyone challenging local laws must be willing to be found guilty at the local level and appeal it to the State.

Thats awesome.  Good for him for standing up for what he believes in.

Although I don't agree with the ticket, it sounds like the police were polite.  Glad to see that nobody got hot-headed.

I'd be surprised if it holds up in court.  Apply the same logic to other constitutional rights.  Talking about my political views on a public street might "disturb other citizens," but everyone would agree that you can't supress a constitutional right because people don't like it.

An update to the article:
http://www.madison.com/tct/mad/topstories/461607

I liked this quote:
Wahl said Madison Police Department officers should not change how they respond to calls of people with guns, as they did before Van Hollen's memo.

Wahl said the person with a gun should be detained, with officers ensuring both the public's safety as well as their own, and police should then investigate the situation to see if any laws were violated.

Maybe we should all start doing it all the time. Would be a great use of police resources

Good for him. My bet is that this gets tossed out of municipal court which will lead no where...

But if someone knows him and he is in need of money for a defense fund let us know...I'll gladly ante up for this.
