| I heard on a local radio station this morning that a legislative committee approved an increase in the DOJ handgun background check fee from $8 to $13. We know that Doyle wanted it raised to $30, but that was shot down. I don't have any links, nor anything more specific right now. |

We have one local dealer who is already charging $10 just because he can. If there is an increase from the DOJ, he will likely go to $15 or more.... |

This isn't about dealer transfers (like is done when you buy a gun online, or a handgun at a gun show and the seller transfers to a local dealer because of the 48hr waiting period). It's about the mandatory background check fee required for handgun sales by dealers (the "$8 telephone call"). I've never heard of any dealer charging more than the $8 that the state charges per call. Dealer "transfers" are one thing... I'd NEVER buy anything from any dealer that inflated the DOJ's telephone call fee. |

There is nothing in the books that says he/she must charge only $8. Could be more, could be less. |
| Dealer discretion or not, I still would not do business with any dealer who charged more than the $8 the state charges him. If the fee charged for this mandated- by - law check by the entity doing the check is $8, I don't expect to pay more than that. Sure, it's an inconvenience for the dealer to make that call, but that's part of his business requirements, like it or not. It's an inconvenience for the buyer too, even more so, because the buyer has to go to the dealer, fill out the paperwork, then come back to pick up his gun 2 days later. Dealers and buyers are all in the same boat... we're stuck with these laws passed by the antis. It should not be an opportunity for the dealer to make a few extra bucks. |

I would not pay it either. It is a bunch of bs for someone to over charge. If someone buys from me I include all of the transfer fees. They are giving me the business, so I can suck up $8. It is just the right thing to do. |

I can't really think of a dealer in the Madison area that doesn't add a few extra $'s to the fee, except for Gander, which is well, Gander.
I think the Ammo Box charges $10 or $15 (I forgot it's been awhile) and PT Firearms charges $10. I don't have any issues with them making choke change (are you guys really that strapped for cash?) on a transaction as I think their effort with the check is worth it -the state raising it for their B.S. projects and other stuff is another story .

The time and effort difference is not even worth mentioning. It is still only 1 phone call and only a couple of lines more on 1 additional form for them to fill out. |

The handgun fee is still $8. All dealers including myself will be notified if or when it goes up. I called the source.
Here is what I do If the gun is shipped to me for transfer I charge a fee $20 long guns $25 for handguns If a customer buys derectly from me, they never see any transfer fees |
| Just wondering if the background check call made is a toll call or not? If it is, maybe it's justified to charge a buck or so extra, to cover the cost of the call itself, by the dealer. If not, then maybe it's just like some companies that charge a lot more for shipping than it actually costs, just to make a profit on it. |

THREAD HIJACK (sorry)
So how ethical is it for a business (kitchen table gun dealer/gunsmith) to charge you $20 for a dealer transfer, then charge another $20 when you come to pick it up because they "Called it in over a month ago and now they need to do it again because its been too long since they called." I understand the point of having to call it in, but it was a complete lower receiver (which doesn't need the handgun check and is free), and I told him it would be 3-4 weeks minimum for the receiver to be shipped. His fault for not listening. His comment to me was "I don't do this stuff for free." Also refused to release the lower unless I paid again. |

Anyways, continue on with your thread. |
