Went out and all I got was cold.

At lunch time my Dad decided to go to Fleet Farm and look for some warmer socks, I thought that was a good idea too.

In teh afternoon I got to see one deer butt and my Dad got some shots off.

Foing back out in a few hours to try again.

It is earn a buck where I hunt so I popped a small doe at 07:00 Saturday morning. Saturday evening I saw a small fork horn that came thru at about mach3 (I saw it in time to go "huh there goes one") and a fawn doe played in front of my stand for about 45 minutes before wandering off.

Sunday I sat in my stand from 06:00-13:00 and did not even see a hair.

My brother has not seen a hair and the registration station said they are less then half the deer at this time last year. I am thinking this last winter killed off a lot more deer than the DNR figured on.

Oh well there is always next weekend.

Put up our stands on public land near Westfield Friday midday.
Hunted Saturday morning till 9.
Came back at 2:00 p.m. to find that some useless P.O.S. stole one of our stands!
A ladder stand for fuck sake!
this stand belonged to a 13 year old boy.
What the fuck is wrong with these animals?
I can't imagine doing something like this.
What if we had caught the turd doing it?
Everybody has guns and tempers get lost. Don't people think about what could happen?
I missed a yote on the run and saw jack other than that.;

Headed up to Wausau on Friday and stayed in the camper and the heater took a shit on us and everything thing inside froze including us!
Well we still got 2 doe Saturday morning and yesterday I helped a friend drive a marsh and shot an 8 pointer!  But missed a coyote.

Everyone I talk to said they haven't seen anything either, heck I drove past Cherokee Marsh yesterday and didn't see that many hunters!

If you set up on public land, maybe the DNR took your stand. IIRC, you can't leave a stand on public property overnight.

I've never had a problem with that in the past.
It was some low life white trash.

Took a doe by 8AM Saturday with my new AR10A4 and my buddy got his 5 point by noon.

We should have gone home then but stayed til Sunday night and only saw squirrels.

Dozens of 'em. Gotta bring a 22 with me next year.

I'm not hunting this year but last year I hunted public land and had a bag chair walk off.  I left my stand around 11am to go to my truck and eat some lunch. I was gone for less than 45min and it was gone. I didn't even see anyone neer where I was sitting but I figured I would fold the chair up and hide it behind a tree just incase. Well, that didn't work! This is a big reason I'm not hunting this year.

Spent the last four days in Tomahawk with my father and stepson. Dad is 76, stepson just turned 13.

Next year part of my hunting attire will be a leash for the boy. Yikes!

Dad did well, bought him a heater and a real nice pair of gloves.  He sat in our old pontoon shed, warm and snug, even at 4 degrees saturday morning!

Three days of hunting WE only saw one deer. And I missed her. Just started climbing my deer stand, had the gun tied off, unloaded. got two steps up, 30 yds away stands a HUGe doe Looking at me. Needless to say when I finally had the gun loaded she was haulin ass.

Other than that we had a great time, watched movies at night, ate steak and twinkies, farted a lot and had a beer with my dad (he hasn't drank a drop in 15 years,Plus he has been in florida from oct to april every year for the last 16)

Yep, had a great hunt this year. got one more in with my dad, and boy did he show my stepson a TON about hunting. Priceless!

He writes in a journal every time he goes up north, you should see some of the stories (so I'm told). I refuse to read any of it til after he's gone. I know there are MANY chapters on stuff he and I have done up there... He was laughing as he was writing in it last night...

Yep, it was a good hunt.

Next year put a parameter of claymores up.  You won't even have much mess to clean up, cause there won't be much left of them.  The dumb mother fucker will get what they've got coming sooner or later.

I've hunted public land (Nicolet Nat'l Forest) since '91. The guys I hunt with have been in the same area since late 80's. We all use tree stands, and until last year, never lost one. Last year two of our group of 8 guys had stick ladders "walk -off" overnight. The "Baby Grand" stands were locked to the trees, so they were still up, but the ladders weren't locked, and they were gone. This year, we're locking everything. Stick ladders and ladder stands can easily be secured, by inserting a padlock in every joint, then chaining the whole thing to the tree. Newer ladder stands will already have the holes drilled, and they give you clips to insert to keep the sections from seperating... we use padlocks instead. Older ladders will likely need the holes drilled... no big deal. I've been locking my ladder stands like this for 10+ years, never lost one. (I'm a locksmith, so I got a case of 36 padlocks for us to use at dealer cost, and all locks use the same key).

As for leaving them up on public land, that depends on whose public land it is. They're not all the same. State owned land does require stands to be taken down and removed every night. National Forest does not require stand removal. But only non-damaging commercially made stands that strap to the tree are allowed (NO screw-in steps, no branch "trimming", no 2X4 & plywood "tree-houses").

County forests will have they're own rules, as do paper company lands. Some do, some don't require stand removal. For example, Vilas County Forest allows non-damaging commercially made stands to be left up overnight for a maximum of 11 consecutive days. All stands must have owner's name and address on them.

I've been hunting every day, all day, so far (except this morning... I stayed up late watching the Packer game, and my very pregnant daughter was in labor... grandson was born at 1:06am this morning. I slept in this morning).

I haven't seen any deer yet, but a bear ran within 10' of my ladder stand at 11:40 am opening day. Some guys doing a drive nearby must've kicked him up, cuz he came flying past me at about 30 mph.  Monday morning, about 7:00am, a pack of 3 wolves wandered through the woods past my stand at about 150 yds away (the proliferation of the wolves in the area is why we haven't seen many deer in our area the past 3-4 years).

BTW... opening day dawned at -9 up here. It was a cold MF, but layers of wool and 10hr handwarmers in my boots kept me reasonably warm.
