New Berlin, Franklin, Oak Creek, Waukesha County, Wauwatosa, Plenty of places to Duck Hunt close Plenty of local trails in the area and tons of inland lakes I only Deer hunt on private land up north der ay. |
| I would stay out of the State (city) of Milwaukee itself look either to the west or the north or the south counties they are all very good places and commute from them is 45 minutes or under depending on where you look. Otherwise yeah our lack of CCW laws sucks and if you lived in Milwaukee you would want to carry they shoot at the firefighters and paramedics they (bad guys) don't care who you are they just shoot. |

If you are looking for LEO work, this is your website: Here Hunting shouldn't be that hard to find. Just get to know some locals and they should know good places. In terms of CCW. They honor MNs CCW and you can find classes around the state. I know there are some in Madison. |
So if I get a Non-Res CCW from MN Wisconsin will honor that? I like the sounds of this...here I was afraid that I wouldn't be able to carry. How do I go about getting a MN permit? Thanks for the site about LEO. Does anyone know how hard it is to get into a department? NY is tough to get on...you're better off if you know someone rather than what you know. Any inside information that would be useful? Thanks again for all the replies! You're all making this idea of moving easier on me. Carl |

Sorry to burst your bubble but the only CCW that WI recognizes is the federal one for LEO. For public hunting areas contact these guys WI DNR, they can send you maps of all the public hunting areas in a specific area. Snowmobiling is pretty much state wide but the best trails (from what I have heard) are farther north. |

In regards to becoming an LEO, you will need 60 credits of college. If you were an LEO in NY State you can apply and go through a 3 wk contingency course at the State Patrol after hire. If you have not been a certified LEO, you will need to go through a 520 hour certification that is put on by various tech schools across the state. You can put yourself through it, but you will have to talk to the various tech schools about their requirements and costs to do so. They may want you to be a part of their 2year Police Science program, and to put yourself through you will be on the bottom of the list, as they will put officers sponsored by a dept and their students in slots first. The way to go is to look into getting into a department parttime, and get them to sponsor you. It will come out of the funds the DOJ allocates that agency for training, so it really doesn't cost them much. If you go this route, there is also a method of going to the 520 recruit training part time, as some of the tech's have classes 2 nights a week and some Saturdays for a year to get it all in. Good thing is the State Training and Standards board will let you work as an LEO while in the program so long as the department will. Full time jobs come up all the time over by Milwaukee/Madison. Many I have seen will have some form of residency requirement, usually living within a distance. The link above on WILENET is the best spot to go for jobs. Yeah, LEO only for CCW here, but unlike NY we don't have the AWB and we can have NFA here! WI will get CCW eventually. If you like the outdoors, I'd see if she can eventually get posted to Eau Claire. I don't know that she will get into much of the higher profile stuff, but you are much closer to many many sportsmans's paradise areas if you're around Eau Claire. Close to Mpls/St Paul MN as well should she choose to get posted there, but then you're really in enemy territory having to live there.... |

Is anyone a Koch Industries Employee or do you know of one/any? I am filling out an application and it is asking if I know anyone that is employed by Koch. It is for a position within Flint Hills Resources. I know this might be a leap of faith for someone to recommend someone whom they have never met before , but I assure you, it will NOT be a mistake. And the good turn will not go unnoticed! Carl |

So did I read that carrying a concealed gun is only a Class A Misdemeanor? Thats a pretty minor offense IF caught. I am assuming that many of you carry regardless because the penality is so low versus your own safety? I'm thinkink this law may just be an over sight for me... Carl |
Negatory. Hell I serve foreclosure summons' as a living, all I have is my trusty pocket knife and pepper spray. Though in 3 years I have yet to use any of them thankfully.
|
yep i repo shit in WI and IL i always have my 1911 on me.. |
No you don't silly..... ( When do I get to some on a ride along?) |
AFAIK CCW is a felony in IL. Watch out. |
How about some areas that are a little more "country"? I grew up on a farm and I tend to need my open spaces. Can I have both, country/land/yard and within a decent commute to Downtown? Carl |
Caldonia or Franksville? |
| What's with all the hate for the city of Milwaukee? As long as you're not in a crackhead neighborhood it's just like any other bigger city, pretty nice in places even. Although if you're looking for country I'd look at Franksville, Caledonia and other parts of Northern Racine County (Borders Milwaukee to the South, 15-20 minutes to downtown from I94). |
iircs only a felony in chiago...might be wrong but for me its worth the chance |
Milwaukee sucks and it's a dying city. I lived there for practically 30 years and it's a socialist tax hell with one of the worst public school systems in the country. Everything wrong in Milwaukee can be blamed on Mayor Hoan and Mayor Ziedler for creating a socialist mindset in people that the system will take care of them and that all their worries can be cured with a handout program. Milwaukee has very beautiful nooks to live in but they are getting few and far between. The "ghetto" is now almost extending as far south as Oklahoma Ave. Been around 27th and Oklahoma lately? In 10 years it will be as far south as College Ave. Oh........I also forgot the new wheel tax imposed. |

Howards Grove is just north west of Sheboygan (which is becoming a shithole) and is in Sheboygan County. I live in Saukville right off of I43 (you would drive through it going to Milwaukee) which is about 25 minutes or so north of downtown Milwaukee, and then Howards Grove is a good 35-40 minutes north of me. Its an averrage nice small town, I think its growing a bit since Sheboygan is really going to hell it seems. For what its worth, my job is serving foreclosure summons' and I think in 3 years I've probably only had just a couple to serve in Howards Grove, in Sheboygan, probably 15-20 a month or more. Kohler which is right to the west of Sheboygan (inbetween Sheboygan and Sheboygan Falls) and is the home of obviously Kohler Company but the town itself is REALLY nice. I'm starting to think they have extremely strict codes or something because the town and most of the houses are spotless. Me personally I'd suggest Ozaukee County which is the county to the north of Milwaukee, there really isn't a bad place in the bunch and its really growing quickly, especially in Grafton. |

I've got a JOB related question. A few of the Armed Security companies/positions I have been looking at say that I need a "State of Wisconsin Firearm certification..." What exactly is that? How do I go about getting one? And what will this cert allow me to do? Thanks. Carl |
So basically I have to take a firearms course and fill out this paperwork? How do I go about finding a course? Will an emplyer provide the training or is this all on the individual? |
It looks like most of your questions got answered, but there was some misinfo on a few. All my responses are first hand knowledge.
I grew up in Glendale. The North Shore area (River Hills, Fox Point, Bayside, WhiteFish Bay is very nice, and the schools are great). I too would avoid the City of Milwaukee itself.
Aside from a few of the large agencies, I believe most depts prefer people who are already certified through a tech-school. It is a 12 week program. Some agencies Milw PD, Milw SO, Madison PD, run their own academy. If you are certified out of state, you don't even need to take a 3 week course - you can take a 3 day test for about $300. You don't necessarily need 60 college credits right away (5 years from hiring) but you will be hard-pressed to find a dept that will hire you without it. wilenet.org is the place to look. There are a lot of smaller agencies around Milw that are worth looking into. The WI retirement system for LE is great. Different agencies have different types of "exams." The standardized WI one is poorly written unfortunately, but do-able. Of course then there are physical requirements, etc.
You need to check the DNRs website regarding hunter's safety education. Everyone born after a certain date (don't remember) MUST take the class, and it can be tricky finding one that's not full. No gun registration in WI - CCW is a class A misdemeanor. The way CCW is being prosecuted now - if you carry your gun and need to shoot someone in self-defense, you're ok. But if you just get busted for CCW, you'll be charged. Technically open carry is legal, but I wouldn't try it if you're looking to start a LE job. If our governor ever gets beat in an election, CCW will have a chance (he vetoed it twice and was almost over-ridden both times). All the fun federal guns (SBRS, machine guns, silencers, etc) are legal in the state - assuming you comply with the federal requirements.
I did quite a bit in the Wausau area and the trails were great. There are trails all over the place, its just the amount of snow you need. SE WI can be hit or miss for good snow. I remember seeing people going a few years ago in the Holy Hill area, but I don't know in recent years. Last winter I was up in Wausau - so 4-5 hour drive North and you consistently have great trails. Hope that helps. |
In my spare time, I do training/consulting for Wackenhut Corp. If you're looking for a decent-paying security job (benefits available), check them out. They have an office in Milw and Madison. State Firearms cert - you need to go through a 40 hour course. You can get that training through the security company. Wackenhut will put you through the training at their cost if they need you for an armed position / if you're interested. The Wackenhut Corporation 633 W. Wisconsin Ave., Ste. 593 Milwaukee, WI 53203 Tel (414) 277-7622 Fax (414) 277-7609 |
Thanks! I sent you a PM... |
I live in Elkhart Lake, about 8 miles west of Howards Grove. It's a great area, and very rural if that's what you're looking for. As far as hunting goes, the majority of land is private, but the DNR manages some fair duck hunting areas in the Kettle Moraine-Northern Unit and the Sheboygan Marsh. Labudde Creek is also pretty good for bagging some woodies and that is even closer to Howards Grove. DNR properties can best be located using the interactive map on the DNR website found here: dnr.wi.gov/org/land/facilities/dnr_lands_mapping.html I know plenty of people that make the commute from up here, but it seems to get tiresome rather quickly... If you have any more questions about the area, let me know. DD |

The WI retirement system for LE is great.
Well, it's good, not great... 60% of your top three years averaged together. Most guys on my Dept. are making between 65-70k so if making 40k or so a year is "great" then yes its great... now take the firemen (some of whom don't pay Social security) or the teachers who get 70% and 80% respectively and it looks a lot better. I know guys from NYPD who retired as millionaires after 25yrs. I know a retired Milwaukee County Shieriffs Dept. capt. who got a drop back of over 500k. I know a couple retired and soon to be retired Milwaukee PD captains (no Social Security) who will be bringing in 90k a year after retirement that's "great". |
|
Western Waukesha County is a very nice area - more country. We live just beyond there, in Sullivan, Jefferson County. Great area. Can shoot out our back door any time! (And believe me, FMD does.) I guess it just depends how rural you want to get. I work in Milwaukee, about two blocks away from the federal building. Takes me 45 minutes to drive in.

Well my fiance just arrived at our new apt/house in West Allis. She said that its small but that it'll do for now. I'm still back here in Upstate NY. This economy is killing my job search. I thought for sure I would have a job or at least had an interview by now but no such luck. I'm also torn as to how long I should stay at my current job before resigning to move out there with her. However I can't justify leaving a $60k job with no leads. I know that we can survive on one income for a while but I'd rather not deal with the unneeded stress of having one income; especially when I don't know how long I would go without finding a job. At this point I'm almost considering a job at Burger King or McDonald's. Just my little rant for the day...

If I may enquire, what kind of profession are you currently in?
There are jobs out there, just depends on what you know, and what you can do. Oh, sorry to be sluggish, but do a google search for Wisconsin Jobs. There's a state site with all the state openings http://ww2.wisconsin.gov/state/employment/app. I'd reccomend the DMA as well, but most of the opportunities, you won't be qualified for. |
| I have an Elementary Education degree but I do not want to teach. I figured that out after I did student teaching my senior year and by then it was too late…I know a waste of a degree. I’ve been out of school now for five years and have been working at a Nuclear Power Plant as a Strategic Response Team Member. Basically its glorified armed security. But we get to carry an AR15 and Glock and get a ton of range time so it has its benefits. Plus the pay is good. In the summers between college semesters I worked as a mason laborer. My work study program at school was lifeguarding. So I have a lack of “real world” experience however I’m looking for anything that pays decent and has decent benefits. |

Glendale is OK but surrounded by the worst of the ghetto with a capital G. Think about the Burlington/East Troy area. She'll have to drive an hour to downtown, and you would be a little over an hour away from the nuke plant in Rockford IL, which I believe is hiring security. I don't have a link, sorry. Also, it's close to the Bong Recreation Area for deer, pheasant, turkey, and duck hunting. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Bong+Recreation+Area+WI&sll=42.672339,-88.328018&sspn=0.288774,0.725098&ie=UTF8&cd=1&ll=42.658202,-88.769531&spn=2.407648,5.800781&z=8 |
