So I was calling around today about having a transfer done and discovered a large range of prices.

From $35 to $75 Plus the $8 background check.

I guess I would have to ask the question to the collective.

What would be a fair price for transfers on handguns and on long guns??

I would say 20-25 bucks would be awesome. I know one guy that does it just for the cost of the background check (and you have to sit down with him and talk for a while) but he is retired and not out to make any cash.

I know another guy that tries to charge 50 in addition to a background fee. I personally refuse to do business with him.

i will not pay a cent over 20$ for a transfer.
went to a local gun shop, wont name names as they are the subject of many a beatings....
anyways, they wanted a percentage or certain $ amount, whichever came out to be more expensive. Also the owner had an attitude because i did not buy it from him. I replied that his price was 200$ over what i paid for the pistol.

$20 any transfer in house
plus $8 if handgun back ground check for the state..
If you are going to have the dealer do the shipping of a firearm $40, you provide the packing materials...
even my 1919 with a6 kit only cost $27accual. UPS ground, from mike mcguire to my dealer..
there arnt to many handguns that I can think of that wont fit into a flat rate box USPS..
whats that $11..?
I remember there was a nice place in Milwaukee that was charging $25 for the state check on a handguns,  in adition to a hefty transfer fee..

its a Nickel and Dime bussiness

Is it so bad that dealers want to try and make money.  Used guns is one thing but everybody wants new guns for wholesale.  Wait until all the small shops are gone and see what the box stores will charge for a transfer if they will at all.  If you want to buy at wholesale get a resale certificate and an ffl for yourself.  The firearms industsry and it's customers are the most cut throat people in business.  Try ordering a car direct from Chevy and having it delivered to a local Dealer.  Now tell him you only want to pay him $10-20 for his time.

Just my $.02

Moe's Hardware, my dealer, does it for $25.  On multiple guns/receivers he only charged a little more, not 3x$25, but I've only done that once.

Ok, agreed. What do you think a fair price for transfers would be? That was the question.

Honestly Flame I have tons of guys around me who will do it from 25 to 50 each transaction. Me, I go to the 25 dollar guy, at least until I get my piece of paper.

25 or 30 would be good guy price. I definately don't begrudge a guy to make a few bucks on me. You can't stay in business if you don't charge something. And if you get to be known as the guy who is fair, there's always other stuff to sell to them too.

60-75 might put you in that other category, the one guys rarely call.

I'd rather see you make it!

And start painting some guns! Hey, if you ever decide to build a garage or something, None and I were talking... he and I can build stuff, and I can wire ANYTHING!

Just saying, can help if you need it!

Sweet you just vonluteered you and None. WOOOHOOO! I have a 24' truck box to use as a shed in the works. I will need help removing everything from the old shed and moving it about 12 feet east and then moving the truck box from the driveway to the corner where the old shed came from. Did I mention the old shed needs a floor??

Oh yeah.

$25 to $50 seems pretty fair at least for used guns.  New guns is a huge can of worms.  Internet sales of new guns is the biggest problem small shops are fighting.  The Glock that used to bring in 10-20% profit for the dealer is now bringing in less than 5%( $20 Transfer).

My problem was always with the guy who comes in picks your brain for an hour(s), handles all your products, complains that things are cheaper online, tells anyone around the same and then when you give him the $25 TRANSFER comes back wanting service because you SOLD it to him.

This is one of the few subjects that actually compels me to post.  Dealers are slowly transitioning to internet business but it is still a huge thorn in the side of what was once a semi-profitable business.  Few get rich but it used to be you could feed your family with a small shop.  Rare nowadays.  Look how many new small shops go under within a year.  Internet is the future of most commerce like it or not.  I have mixed feelings and I have worked/ work both sides of the barbwire.

I now have $.04 invested in this thread.

By the way Flame my rant was not directed at you and you do not look like the sensitive candy-ass type that would take anything personal anyway.

I know. I was not offended. I agree with everything you said.

This is an "I want it now and at the cheapest price possible world." I would be lying if I said I was not like that in certain aspects. I always look for the best deal. However everyone does get pissy over a couple of bucks here and there. In the economy we are in it is hard not to watch every dime we spend. In the same respect people need to understand that everything that you hear about on TV, or the radio about outsourcing and all that crap is mostly caused by us the consumer. Everyone wants to make more money and spend less on goods and services. There are not a whole lot of ways out there to accomplish that. But I digress.

In the end if anyone wants to buy a gun it has to be transferred to a dealer. A dealer got to be a dealer through a lot of work and money. There is nore to a transfer than just filling out a form and signing it. Then watching the guy make a phone call. There are behind the sceen things that take place that the buyer never sees.

I am just trying to get a feel for what the market will support. I think you figured that out already.

The place by me (it's in Grafton) just raised their transfer price on "military weapons"

to $75

The reason is: "military weapons and assault rifles attract tighter scrutiny from the government."  The owner set this price.  I feel bad because the people that work for him are a family and are very nice, but have no say in this.  I won't be doing business there anymore.

$20 to $30 seems fair.  You should get paid for your work and licensing requirements.

Regarding working on a shed, I'm happy to help out as a thanks for the reloading seminar.  Assuming I can get away.

I've always done $20 for long guns.  Hand guns are $20 + $8 for the state background check.  IF a lock isn't provided and I (by Federal law) have to provide one, I ask an additional five bucks because I don't get locks for free.

NFA depends upon the size of the item and the type of transfer (i.e. how long it sits in my safe).  An AOW pen gun on a corp/trust transfer is 40.00.  A M2HB .50BMG MG on a personal transfer is going to be 200.00 because it's %$#@! huge and it'll be here for a while.  My record is $250.00 for a personal transfer on a Lahti 20mm.  I'm actuallt glad that the buyer went with another dealer, as it would have used up one of my DD transfers.

Stuff can also go into a safety deposit box for the duration of the transfer at the buyer's request.  I only ask a 40.00 transfer fee plus whatever the bank charges for the box-- and a hamburger or that they cover the cost of gas to and from the bank.  Everyone's done the burger.  :)

A dealer near me (who is now out of business) did transfers for his "regular customers" for $15. Those who weren't "regular customers" were charged $25 ($8 handgun charge was extra for everyone).

Two other dealers nearby charge $25 and $35 respectively. However, I've heard that the $35 guy does them for $10 if you buy $100 or more worth of "accessories" for that gun from him (accessories include scopes/rings/mounts, ammo, slings, magazines, cases, holsters), and they're free if you buy $150 worth. Sounds fair to me.
