Anybody here using Road Runner notice a drastic change in speed lately?
Within the last 2 or 3 weeks navigating has been a test of patience.
Just curious.

No problems here in the Fox Valley using 'RR light'.  

I did have to have the cable modem replaced once, might that be a part of your problem?

Spoke with my sister and brother today and they both expressed the same situation that I am having.  Called RR and of course they say it is not their problem.
2 years and no problems, now since 2 weeks ago it has slowed down considerably.

Isn't there a site yo can visit that tells you the actual speed of your connection? If you can document their service isn't working as described it will be harder for them to dismiss your complaint.

Everytime my RR acts up, more or less once every 6-12 months, I have found the issues to be packet loss related. Packet loss is felt when browsing web pages as a very long wait for the page to start to load or stops and starts during loading, it can also sometimes cause pictures to not show up or pages to load incorrectly. It is in most cases TW's problem and there isn't a whole lot a tech can do for you cause its relative to too much data moving threw not enough hardware. Its fairly easy to test. Open 2 command prompt windows(start>run>cmd). Type "tracert www.google.com" there should be an ip address listed in the first 2 or 3 of 10.x.x.x thats the switch for your neighborhood and in my experiance almost always were the issue is. Then type "ping 10.x.x.x -t", where 10.x.x.x is the actual ip address that you found in the previous step. This will run a never ending ping loop to the switch in the street. Then in the second window type "ping www.google.com -t" that will run a never ending ping to google which as we all know, if google is down, the world is more or less over. Then you can target the windows and hit the break key on your keyboard to get info on packet loss from them.

If packet loss to google is simmilar to the packet loss to the switch in the street. Then the issues is very close to you obviously. Make sure noone is saturating your upload or download, most commonly accomplished by running filesharing software. Also make sure if you have wireless noone is stealing it and saturating your connection. Figuring that isn't the case. Try pluging your pc straight into your modem(this requires a power cycle or a modem reset in the case of the new modems) If that doesn't fix it call time warner you may need a new modem or they may possibly be able to remedy something with your signal. I wouldn't get your hopes up though as these things generally just take 2-4 weeks for time warner to remedy internally by making routing adjustments.

There are situations screwy enough that can be solved by having a tech come out. Sometimes when they set someone else up in the neighborhood it can cause signal issues for you, which the techs can resolve. Oddly enough replacing your modem can sometimes remedy these intermitant issues as well.

If the google ping has packetloss and the 10.x.x.x ping doesnt, make sure you power cycle your modem, preferably over night or during the day when your at work. I have found when this occurs if I can get shifted to a differnt A or B class IP it will remedy the issues as I assume it must be relative to some sort of routing issue at where ever TW has their hardware.

My RR tested at 4859kbps download, 489kbps upload.
I'm getting their upgraded modem today (advertised 10mbps)and I'll post the results.
Edit to add:New test is slower 4558kbps download, 493kbps upload.

1527/518 DSL in the boonies (CenturyTel) to NYC.

Speedtests only measure throughput to a specific ip. Pinging different servers may cause different results.

When I had RR, every once in a while they would change how I was routed to major cities.  At one point, my trace route through to a server in Maryland was hitting Chicago, Dallas, Kansas City, San Fransisco, Denver, and then back to the East Coast via NYC and then on to DC.  If I pinged a server in Boston, that route was Milwaukee, Chicago, NYC, Boston.



Needless to say, how you are routed to a specific server can makes a huge difference in TTL and packet loss.  RR's network had a server in CO that was unreliable, so trying to hit the above server in MD (or any server in the SE) resulted in slow speeds and a multitude of errors.  Unfortunately my own off-site hosting was in FL at the time.

Try looking on your end for a problem first.  If it's still slow, try "VisualTraceRoute" (the free version) and see where your packet loss is.  Don't expect RR to fix it, but it's nice to know where the issue lies.

Resetting the modem to get a new IP often worked for me to change the routing.

Try speedtest.net.  you pick where you ping.  Sorry not sure how to make it a link.  It will also you show you others users average speeds.  

If you call Time Warners customer service line and tell them your modem is offline, they will come out and check everything out for free.
