I've been talking about this with the Wife since we just became eligible. Getting the license seems neat, but we're wondering what the pro's are. Last I read up on CCW, most of the state-to-state reciprosity agreements DO NOT extend to out of state permit holders. We don't go to MN; it'd be a special trip to drop the forms off. Our only forseeable MN encursions might be to attend a D.E. function of some sort. What's the permit do for you outside of having an "I-can-pass-a-background-check" card in your wallet? |

Well I was just thinking out loud and thought that maybe it would look good when applying for a WI CCW in the future. Sort of a " I can be trusted because I have not killed anyone yet, with my other CCW" theory. This is just a thought and may not or probably not have any bearing on the application process for WI in the future. A place to start?? The wife and I were bantering the idea of getting a CCW permit from all of the available states. For travel and coolness reasons. Then pitched the idea due to the cost, and impracticality. |

More non-resident CCW permit/licence info than you'd ever want to know (packing.org is the SH*T!: Michigan, New Hampshire, and South Carolina are the only states that have reciprocity for resident permits specifically, so generally without WI CCW you can not (legally) carry in those states. NH does however, offer it's own non-resident permit for $20...if you have a non-resident permit from somewhere else. Most other states are better about recognizing non-res permits. The MN NR CCW is a decent permit to get, but only if you visit MN often (IMHO). They currently have some reciprocity with other states (13 not including MI), but only recognize the Utah non-resident permits. The FL NR CCW is great for just about everywhere else in the country (most bang for the buck, as it gets you 26 states excluding MI or NH). Cost is about $20 higher than MN, but you can apply by mail. Unfortunately it's not regognized by MN. I don't visit NH any more, so their permit isn't high on my list. I do spend a lot of time passing through PA, and one of these days I'll pick up one of their permits; but I'm still GTG with a non-res FL permit. Note that there are only a few counties in PA that will issue by mail, and most of them like to see a permit from somewhere else before issuing (Center County is the easiest). If you spend any time in WV, you may also want to look into a VA non-resident permit. There is some issue as to wether or not a VA NR is valid there, but WV law is silent on the matter, and their AG has not issued an opinion. No one wants to test the theory (DA's and permit holders alike). Either way, open carry in WV is the only other (perfectly legal) option there, so it may not be worth the $100 for a VA NR for you. Utah has a great non-resident permit, but you must take a class from a UT BCI certified instructor. Nearest one I know of is somewhere in IL, and I believe they want something like $300 for the class. A UT non-resident permit basically will give you what you get for FL, plus one or two more states (MN included). The DETC class we just took will satifiy the training requirements for most other states' non-res programs, however. With my Florida and Virginia permits, my world looks like this (NM and NV are open carry / OK to conceal in a vehicle states): ![]() Add MN to the list, and it's a pretty picture indeed. As to why I'd want to spend the money, get the training, and have the "I'm a good guy" card; Today, I'll be traveling from home, to Oshkosh, then to Indianapolis, and on to Cincy. As soon as I hit Gary, I'll be legally armed, and remain so until I hit the IL line next Thursday. It comes down to the fact that I want to abide by the law where possible As an additional incentive: reciprocity is built-into the PPA (both the old and the new versions). On the day it goes into effect (if it ever gets through), I'll most likely be legal without the WI permit. -FMD Caviats: IANAL, YMMV, This is JMHO, etc. etc. ad nauseum. |

I've gotten a few requests for more info on the non-resident permit application process, so I just posted this in the carry section of Arfcom: www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=5&f=10&t=19222&page=1 |
