So I am at the shop and I start talking about my new safe, and it strikes up a discusson of sorts with the accounting guy and the computer nerd. The accounting guy starts talking about something that happened at his next door neighbors house in which the S.W.A.T. team was apparently called. He said they took 18 guns out of the house and he even had  "GASP!"  an AK-47! NOOOOOO!!!!Gather the children and sing We are the World!

Anyway this caught my attention now. I listened as they called this guy a lunatic and metally unstable etc. So I asked, "What makes him a lunatic? Is it that he own an AK-47?" The answer I got was both amusing and tragic at the same time. "He had 18 guns." "So", I said. This makes him crazy?  "Well he was not a hunter, a collector, or in the military." Again I said, "So, what?.?" "He had 18 guns!. he exclaimed! "he has no need for them."  Me: Well, maybe he is a target shooter?"  He isn't, he does not shoot at all."  At this point I expressed my dislike for the "need" argument as a weak and piss poor arguement. Because we only "NEED" Food, water, and air to breath, for life. I was then told I was straying from the topic. I told them, If he has them and does not use them he is either a collector or he uses them for home defense." The home defense comment got them all worked up. "You only need one gun for home defense not 18!" I said, "Maybe you only need one gun, maybe I want more." I then said "If the man leagally obtained them and is allowed by law to have them, then there is no reason he should not have them."

Keeping my whits about me, I could see that I could not in the time I had before I had to leave, talk any sense into them, said "Well I guess on this subject you and I will not see eye to eye, but I will fight to the death this mans right to own 18 guns.
The computer geek then chimes in, "Why are you talking to him about this he is just a lunatic as well. (reffering to me)  The compugeek metioned something about this guy having trip wires around his house. So I inqured about the entire story, figuring there was far more of the story I did not hear. He told me "I am not telling you the rest does not matter."
I said, "I will stand by my statement and his right to have 18 guns."

Then I was paged for a phone call and the discussion ended.

This apparently happened in the greater Oconomowoc area. As for a time frame I would have to guess in the last 2 weeks, but I am not sure.
Either way, I find it a little unnerving that there are many people out there that think this way for no good reason, other than that the media has told them that guns are scary.

She cannot stand these types of people either. She is a gun person like me. Well for the most part, anyway. She shoots and hunts with me and wants more guns, when we can afford more. So yeah she is like me I guess.

I hate that argument too.  The 'you don't need it' argument.

I usually point to their favorite hobby and how they don't 'need' it.  And how just about anything can be seen as harmful.  Softball?  Oh, dangerous weapons.  Nascar?  Oh, people die AND it's bad for the environment.  Drinking, smoking, fatty foods, watching TV/Movies (and not getting enough exercise) - oh, don't get me started!

After all of the above sarcasm, they really have no argument other than: I still think it's wrong (with no reason).  It's maddening sometimes, it really is.

Sorry NJ wants to chime in as well.  I have a buddy who is somewhat conservative.  The other day he sees my Bushmaster catalog on my desk and says what the hell is this.  And I tell him I'm looking for parts for mine.  He says to me, "You have one of those", pointing to the carbine on the cover.  And I say, "Nope, I got 2!".  And then I get "What do you NEED one of them for?"  UUUUGGG!!!  So then he got the full compliment of arguements, and walked away shaking his head.  THEY JUST DON'T GET IT!!

here's a point to add, because our forefathers wanted us to have freedom!

I am twenty-something and many of the same age group have never had to rely on a gun. I went and served time in OIF and tell people once you live like that you can't understand why you didn't before!

MAybe they would had freaked if they saw what I had last summer. A little over 120 rifles and pistols of a friend while he was away for a few months. (not mine, I was "babysitting" them) Then add in my "children". Lets just say I was slightly armed.
