| We shoot at Boone (Richfield) and Racine for the AR matches, usually 50yds with falling plates and a mover. Lots of fun, somewhat intense 60 second drills, usually 10-20 regular competitors. Was wondering what other parts of the state was doing when I saw your post for a get-together. Have they done this before? |
yep thats what this forum was made for,so whats up guys what to shoot this weekend? |
|
tattoo; I travel between the Dane county range and Ft McCoy regularly, would like to discuss this "informal match" stuff I have been doing in person with you. Would you be around the Ammo Box Wed 4/30, Thu 5/1 ? Do you guys prefer National Match type shooting or informal Fun Matches? Hartland (Delafield) has a NM on 5/3 We are planning a AR fun match with falling plates/mover at Boone 5/4. Advise. |
|
Photoman; we have been using the impact area BEHIND the 500yd military range for our impromptu fun matches, but havnt been there this year yet, only for NM matches, waiting for better weather, you know how much fun it can be shooting next to the lake in spring. I'm going to be out of state until Wed but if possible will meet with tattoo next week and put together a informal shoot/gettogether. |
| To ask a dumb qustion... what kinds of sights are you guys using? Assuming at "fun shoots" a scope is ok, but are opticals (scope or red-dot) used in NM shooting? The latest Bushy "Varminter' and "V MATCH" both are front sightless. Just had my Dissipator 16" front post taken off. Bummer. |
|
Just went out Saturday to get the AR sighted in. They had the wimps and idiots match going on over on the 600. I had no clue there was a match which kinda ticked me off cuz i need to get some hours in. Saw a hawk disembowl a rabbit on a shot up target stand on friday, I lovew shooting on the lake weather is never the same, wind is never the same. It can be a pain but hey thats how ya learn right. I'll keep checking and see what happens with the shoot. I may not shoot but i'd show up if I'm not stuck at work. Just saw the dates... if it's close I'll try to make it but were moving those days, better than being at work! |

Hey Ballistik & Photoman; Do you guys shoot at the range south of the power plant off 7 mi. rd? If so, Do you have to belong to a club to shoot there? I've sighted my deer rifle there before, but was wondering where I could get info about the range/club. Is there any info online? Thanks CJ |
| That would be the place. As far as I know there is no on-line info about the range or club. I've been told that that is by design but i could not comferm that. I was brought into the club through my best friends father as he is a member. And as far as i can tell from the by-laws being sponcered in by a member is the only way in, other than the open to the public shoots(cowboy action, highpower, IDPA, etc.) Shoot me an e-mail with any other questions, and if i can't answer them i'll forward them to one of the board members that can. |
| For the 'fun' matches at Boone, optics are fine. The optic of choice for most seems to be an Aimpoint (Comp-M, ML, ML-2 etc.) Plenty of people use irons or other optics though. Just bring what you have. As for the NM Service Rifle course of fire, iron sights are required. Several other requirements also apply. Although modifications can be done, the rifle should be of an A2 configuration. An A1 or earlier may work but you would be at a disadvantage with the sights. If you look at the Armalite NM model, you will get a good idea of what the requirements and allowable modifications are. Ballistik can probably expand on this and the fun matches when he his back in town. I believe he his back on Wed. |
| Hey guys, back now and just figured out how to send e-mails. Told you I was a computer dork. Anyway, planning a AR fun match May 4 at Boone range to begin at 11:00. Boone is 1 mile west of Hwy 164 on Hwy 167. Bring at least 1 dependable 30rd mag and at least 100 rds ball. 50 yard targets. |
I'm in, provided it's close enough... Checking for the intersection of 164 and 167 now... Oh well... It looks like I'm gonna be figuring out 'How to take a 20" AR on a motorcycle'... (The idea of 'broken down, each piece wrapped up in sheets, and packed in a backpack' comes to mind)... Otherwise my cost in gas will exceed the range fee... 'AR Only' question removed, as the only rifle I have that will break down small enough for motorcycle transport... |
I think Sussex or Racine is the closest... Milwaukee/Waukesha ranges seem to all be indoor pistol ranges... |

Daniel Boone is a "members only" club as far as I know. Is one of the "AR15.com" group a member and everyone else a "guest"? Whose name does one use if we are asked whose guest we are? Who is the coordinating person? The "handle" (name) on this website is meaningless to "Boone'. What kind of targets for the 50yd shoot? Can any types of sights be used? Is it off-hand, bench, sitting, or prone? Are scores/points tallied? Is it timed? Are "opticals" shooting against iron sights? ...more info please. |
|
That is exactly what this is, a fun match with 50 yard targets and a mover, open to the public but with normal safety restrictions. We usually start offhand and see how it goes. I'll be setting up about 10:30 so we can shoot by 11, usually run out of energy and ammo by 2 or so. Be there. |
umm were is the shoot? near what town? IM sent ballistik...please read it and call me thanks ray |

Hey Ballistik, Just want to confirm the details of the AR-15 match on 4 May. 11am at D. Boone? I know it's a 'fun' match (no plaques, trophies etc), but is there any cost or donation to cover targets, etc.? Any limitaions on caliber or configuration? (I think you mentioned steel targets, is anything other than 5.56 allowed?) Looking forward to it, thanks. |
Ray, it's in Hubertis, WI. Check the website at www.championshooters.com/clubs/wi-dbc.html for directions. Use Yahoo Maps for 1 Main Street, Hubertis, WI and it should give you a rough idea (that's how I'm finding it, at least!). |
| Practical;....probably limit this match to 223 ball,HP,etc, actually anything other than M855 or green tip(penetrator) ammo. Some guys shoot 30 carbine, 9MM but we will be using Club steel targets and mover and dont want to damage anything. Probably charge $1 per pass to return something to the club for use of their facilities. Excellent club, outstanding members with aggresive junior program, active in DCM and hunter safety programs. If you do not belong to a club you should, and this club is an example of what can be accomplished. Bob. |
