Hey everyone. I just bought a house in Stapleton and will be moving from San Antonio next month. I've read the basic info on CO gun laws and I've tried to read through this part of the forum to gain as much info as I can.

From what I understand (please correct me if I'm wrong on any of these) the 15 round mag limit is widely ignored and I can essentially bring all my "high cap" mags with me.  I can also continue to use my Texas CHL as long as I still have an active Texas ID.  Since my wife and I like to take our dogs hiking, I believe I can also carry concealed while hiking in the state/national parks.

I haven't found anything noting any other major restrictions for Denver, but my father lives up in Westminster and I'm considering storing most of my collection there, mostly for space reasons. Are there other city/local restrictions I need to be aware of?  Any good ranges you guys can recommend?  I've tried shoot indoors, not bad but won't be super close either.

I'll be working at the Anschutz campus and won't have a ton of free time, but it would be nice to know where to start. Thanks!

Denver county is a "home rule" municipality and apparently they do not have to follow the state preemption laws.

I believe Denver has an "assault weapons ban" that prohibits "assault weapons" when they have a mag capacity above 21 rounds. I still believe just having a AR is fine as long as you dont possess mags above 21 rounds.  Open carry is banned in Denver.

I purposely live outside Denver County for this reason and refuse to ever live there.

Not sure what Denver is doing in terms of enforcing that BS anymore/ new enforcement with the 15 round mag cap.

But yeah, If you owned the Mags prior to July 1st, 2013, you can possess them here in this state... But its kind of ZFG deal around here.

ETA: Should have bought a house in Aurora if you were going to be working at the Anschutz Campus and avoided Denver County

The Denver "assault weapon" and high cap mag rules are less enforced than the state laws in my experience.

The Bass Pro in Stapleton sells ARs, by the way.

Also, Golden Gun Club is in Watkins a little to the east.  Membership required.

Welcome!

FYI: When you go to get a Colorado DL, they will issue you a temporary paper DL without a photo and punch VOID In your Texas DL. You won't be able to carry concealed under your Texas CCW until your actual Colorado DL arrives in the mail. You can then carry for 90 days from the issuance date of State of Colorado issued photo ID under your Texas CCW. Usually 90 days is enough processing time to get your Colorado CCW, which you will have to wait until you get a Colorado DL to apply for.

It's a convoluted process, but it's something to think about and plan for.

except the conceal carry laws, which no city or county can restrict any further than state law.  C.R.S. 18-12-201(3)

Edit to add: Carrying in your car falls under the conceal carry laws.  You can carry in your car, loaded, concealed or not, without a permit, even in Denver County.  Though I've known people who have had trouble with Denver cops on this issue, despite the law being on their side.   Cops who disregard the law, imagine that.

Misses and I both work at Anschutz. Care to say what you'll be doing?
ETA: we moved here last year, bought a house in aurora (meh...its too far from everything but work, but the price was "right". Stapleton...dang). You'll probably end up like most of us and not spend weekends at your house anyway.

Depending where on campus you'll be, id be happy to give a tour of my little corner of it.

I'm a new resident with CU. Looking forward to seeing more of Denver and the outdoors. They have me bouncing around between UCH, DH, and the VA.

Nice, the VA appears to be closer to "done", but still not exactly ready. I park in the ramp just beside it every day.

The gun store where I picked up my last Core15 confirmed that Denver classifies it as an assault rifle because it uses a 30 round mag, detach the mag and it's apparently a normal rifle.
