so gun laws ,good ,check. what about the town? looking at the city plan, looks like they want growth, but wanting and doing can be 2 different things. I think a lot of its growth depended on oil/gas. I worked with quite a few guys in ND that spent time working in GJ. ETA I just asked my GF if the town is as dirty as I've seen in pictures and she said yes. Her brother worked out there and she visited. One thing I hated about Williston ND is how dirty it was all the time. |

So is it not doing as good now? And dirty like a lot of dust in the air? Dirty as in litter and homeless people I'm guessing which, GJ unfortunately does have issues with. All in all, GJ is a great town. I was born and raised there and lived there for the first 21 years of my life. They are trying to bring in newer industry and jobs so they can slowly ween themselves off of depending on the oil and gas industry |

Here's my take, having moved here from the front range 8 years ago....
Grand Junction (and the rest of the valley for that matter) is situated in an ideal location if you enjoy the outdoors. Hunting, fishing, camping, jeeping, hiking, white water rafting, climbing, mountain biking; all of these are available within a short drive. The GJ area economy is slowly growing, very very slowly. As Kiltakaze mentioned, the area seems to be trying to diversify it's economic base so that the oil/gas boom and crash does not have such a large impact. It's a pretty small valley, has little in the way of traffic, congestion, etc. Post or PM if you have more specific questions. Good luck |

My company has an opening there, Just looking at options at this point. and hows the current gun climate in Co these days? Dirty?? IMO not really. There's the usual crap associated with any larger populated area. That isn't something that magically disappears once you move, anywhere. It may not be visible during a 1 week trip, however over time one encounters the lowest common denominator. The Plus is it's on the western slope, lots of wide open space to roam. We looked at relocating there from the front range. Unfortunately the 60K pop is too large for us. Where we're located it was less than 6K 22 yrs ago, now sitting @ 23K that's too many people. Being retired, IF we wanted to stay in CO, the western slope would be the place to move to. Do keep in mind If it's something you do relocate to, don't think the house you own is going to get sold as fast as front range property's are. OR for the $$ it brings. Some west slope areas. Once you're there, you're there. |

Ok, hijacking this. I'm going there next weekend for a week. What are some places to eat, places to explore, etc? Colorado National Monument is gorgeous this time of year. If you or your s.o. enjoy wine, lots of vineyards and wine tours in the area. Might be worth it to take a day trip over the Grand Mesa and maybe dip down into the Ouray area. Lots to see and do in a relatively short distance. For food, Bin 707 for burgers and the like. Pricey but incredibly good. There are typical chains such as Texas Roadhouse, Chilis, etc. For decent BBQ Rib City Grill is pretty good. For Chinese I'd check out Chin Chin and there is also a hibachi grill called Tepenyaki. Lots of incredible Mexican food restaurants around as well. I personally like Leons, Las Marias, and Dos Hombres Hit me up when you are in the area and maybe we can grab dinner or something. Any idea exactly what days you'll be in the area? ETA: and Kannah Creek for awesome pizza and better beer! |

My wife and I are lifelong natives. As mentioned the outdoor options are good. Lots of chain restaurants, most of the local joints are mexican food (these are almost the only mom and pops left).
Monument is pretty to drive over or hike, the mesa will be too cold for a while yet (can still usually find little patches of snow on the 4th of july). Western slope is still a conservative area. GJ has a huge population of panhandlers on all corners. Marijuana is still not allowed in GJ or most of Mesa County, this seems to keep the level of hippies down a little bit compared to towns where its allowed. Currently the best simple food is Pollo Azado on corner of 3rd and North. Cheap working mans joint, best chicken ever. Don't expect atmosphere. Look for the man in the chicken suit. |
